City Blog Koblenz: Focus on Mobility, Playgrounds, and Digitalization in February 2026
In February 2026, Koblenz made key decisions on mobility, barrier-free playgrounds, and digitalization. Here is an overview of the most important developments of the month.
Mobility, Playgrounds, and Digitalization in Focus
What was important this month
- Municipal Freeze for Goldgrube – A construction freeze was approved to prepare for urban redevelopment.
- Barrier-Free Playgrounds – New communication boards and benches for the Bleidenberg playground are planned.
- Digital Progress – IT projects worth over 800,000 euros were approved, including server and software investments.
- New Pedestrian Bridge in Bubenheim – The bridge will be named the "Mariechen-Laux Bridge" in the future.
- Full-Day School Offer in Rohrerhof – A new full-day school program will be introduced for the 2026/27 school year.
- Bike Traffic Project "Panorama-Höhenradweg" – Koblenz is collaborating with eleven municipalities and Mosellandtouristik GmbH.
Mobility and Traffic: From Pedestrians to Urban Drainage
Mobility development in Koblenz is on the move. According to the "Mobility in Germany 2023" study, the share of pedestrian traffic in the city increased from 28% (2017) to 32% (2023) – a positive development also reflected in the new guidelines for the design of special uses in public space. These, for example, allow seating in front of retail stores but under strict design requirements.
In the field of urban drainage, the Mittelrheinische Treuhand GmbH has been appointed as the audit authority for the next three years. The financial report of Koblenz's urban drainage showed a loss of over 4 million euros in 2024, but also investments in modern infrastructure – such as the photovoltaic installation on the Neuendorf pumping station.
Playgrounds and Youth Support: Barrier-Free and Inclusive
The city of Koblenz is increasingly committed to barrier-free playgrounds. Two barrier-free benches will be installed at the Bleidenberg playground, funded by sponsorship. In addition, communication boards are planned for four playgrounds to promote inclusion – a step in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
There are also advances in kindergarten development: The new construction of the Rosenquartier kindergarten and the forest kindergarten is underway, and the replacement of the St. Maternus kindergarten is in planning. For 2026, a focus on implementing the Full-Time Educational Support Act (GaFöG) is planned.
Digitalization and IT: Investments and Process Development
Koblenz is making substantial investments in digital infrastructure. In February, projects worth over 800,000 euros were approved, including four DELL servers, IBM flash storage, and Microsoft software licenses. In addition, several digital administrative services were updated or introduced – from online registration for association events to digital tax notices.
Some processes such as the export of cultural goods or postal voting remain offline for now. However, the city is working to make more services digital – for example, in applying for residence permits or naturalization.
Overview of Further Municipal Topics
In addition to these central topics, there were also regional developments: A new pedestrian bridge was named in Bubenheim, and a new bike path is planned in Güls. In Rübenach, a proposal was submitted to extend the 30 km/h zone to the Kilianstraße. In cultural policy, a cooperation agreement with the umbrella organization for city partnerships was concluded to strengthen international relations.
Outlook for March 2026
The work of the city of Koblenz will continue to be shaped in March 2026 by investments in infrastructure, digitalization, and inclusion. The implementation of full-day schools, the planning of barrier-free playgrounds, and the further development of cycling traffic will remain central topics. In addition, numerous local projects and decisions are planned in many districts to further improve the quality of life for citizens.
