Offenburg's Urban Transformation: Focus on Infrastructure and Sustainability in February 2026

In February 2026, Offenburg's municipal administration made decisive moves in the field of Urban Development and Construction. The Technical Committee laid the groundwork for the modernization of salt storage and the digital management of the parking lot at Gifizsee. These decisions reflect not only technological innovation but also the city's commitment to sustainable urban development.

Offenburg's Evolving Infrastructure: Salt Silos and Digital Parking

The city of Offenburg has taken a decisive step toward modern, sustainable infrastructure in February 2026. The Technical Committee made several landmark decisions that will fundamentally change both winter road maintenance and parking management. Two key projects were at the center of these discussions: the construction of a new salt silo facility and the digitalization of the parking lot at Gifizsee.

Modernization of Salt Storage: Safety and Efficiency

The existing salt storage hall on the grounds of Technische Betriebe Offenburg (TBO) in Kinziger Straße was no longer safe enough for bulk storage due to corrosion damage. To ensure structural safety and the efficiency of winter road maintenance, the Technical Committee approved the construction of a new salt silo with an integrated brine production facility on 02.02.2026. The estimated cost of the project is 1.37 million euros.

The new facility will include two silos with a filling capacity of 250 tons each and an integrated brine plant with a capacity of approximately 50 m³. It will be built in the area west of the vehicle garage, with the access road remaining intact. The construction is designed to be ready for use in the 2026/2027 winter season.

Previously, the logistics were complex, as salt had to be transported between the ammunition depot and the TBO site. With the new facility, this effort will be eliminated. The former salt hall will now serve as a transshipment point for sweeping machines and waste vehicles, further increasing efficiency.

Digital Parking Management at Gifizsee: Efficiency and Sustainability

Another project that engaged the Technical Committee was the renovation and digitalization of the parking lot at the Gifizsee beach resort. With a budget of approximately 75,000 euros, a free-flow system with LPR cameras (License Plate Recognition) will be introduced to enable vehicle license plate recognition. Payment can be made in cash, contactless, or digitally via the "EasyPark" app.

The technology will be provided by ICA, a partner already active in other TBO parking facilities. Motorhomes will be automatically billed with a special tariff. If payment is not made within 48 hours, an increased fee will be invoiced by a debt collection agency.

The renovation costs themselves are not included in the 75,000 euros. They include, among other things, the installation of new power and data lines and the completion of the parking measures by mid-May 2026. The goal is to increase traffic safety while enabling a modern and efficient parking management system.

Pilot Project "TreeTank": Sustainability in Green Spaces

Another highlight of Offenburg's urban development is the pilot project "TreeTank," a root chamber system developed by Wavin. The goal is to sustainably connect tree areas and park spaces while ensuring long-term traffic safety. The system consists of highly modular polypropylene recycled material and will be implemented in autumn 2026.

Five trees will be planted in the green strip opposite the motorhome parking area. Existing parking spots will be removed in favor of the new access road. The cost of the pilot installation is at least 20,000 euros per tree area, with approximately 100,000 euros allocated for planning in the 2026 budget. The city is also reviewing funding programs to reduce the costs.

Outlook: Offenburg as a Model for Sustainable Urban Development

The decisions of the Technical Committee show that Offenburg is not only investing in technological innovation but also in sustainability and efficiency. With the modernization of salt storage and the digitalization of the parking lot at Gifizsee, the city will ensure its infrastructure in the long term. At the same time, the "TreeTank" project sets an example for sustainable green space planning.

Investments in modern facilities and digital systems are not only sensible but also necessary to prepare Offenburg for future challenges. The city proves that Urban Development and Construction is not only a matter of planning, but also an expression of foresight and responsibility.
