Weimar Focuses on Youth Promotion – March 2026 in the Spotlight

In March 2026, Weimar made several key decisions in the area of youth promotion. From the youth welfare budget to the development of a new youth promotion plan and inclusive early childhood support – the city council and its committees set clear priorities for a sustainable youth policy.

Youth Promotion in Weimar: March 2026 in the Spotlight

The city of Weimar has focused more strongly on the future of its youth in March 2026. In several meetings of the Youth Welfare Committee and its subcommittees, fundamental decisions were made that will shape the structure and direction of youth promotion for the coming years. At the same time, new methods of participation and evaluation were discussed in order to better identify and respond to the needs of the younger generation.

Youth Welfare Budget 2026: Budget as an Investment in the Future

During the meeting on March 4, 2026, the first reading of the Youth Welfare Budget 2026 was addressed. The budget reflects the priorities of the city of Weimar, including the equipment and care of youth rooms in the districts, support for associations and initiatives, and investments in early childhood development projects. The budget planning is also a response to the declining birth rate – in 2025, only 346 children were born in Weimar, the lowest figure in history. The city is reacting with increased investment in early childhood education and community-based social work.

Inclusive Early Childhood Development: A Successful Model from North Frisia

Another central topic was the implementation of the inclusive early childhood development model, which has already led to cost reductions in youth welfare in North Frisia. The implementation in Weimar has been planned since April 2025, and the infrastructure will be discussed in the city council on May 6, 2026. Currently, 169 children in Weimar are participating in early childhood development programs, 34 of whom are under the age of three. Discussions in the committee showed that the city is focusing not only on promotion, but also on quality assurance – for example, by including child and youth protection concepts among the organizations involved.

Youth Promotion Plan 2028–2032: Participation Processes in Motion

The Youth Promotion Plan 2028–2032 is another focal point that was already discussed in the subcommittee meeting on February 24, 2026, and again in March 2026. The goal is to actively involve young people in the planning process. A planned online survey of sixth and seventh graders in all schools is intended to identify the needs of young people. The survey will be integrated into class time to ensure broad participation. The results will be evaluated in three social areas.

In addition, participation workshops are planned for June 2026, in which the results will be discussed together with young people and organizations. The committee discussions showed that it is about more than just data – it is about promoting independence and the measurability of preventive measures. The role of transfer payments and their possible reduction, however, remained controversial.

Retreat and Outlook: Structural Planning in March

On March 28, 2026, a retreat took place in which projects and their future role in the youth promotion plan were presented. Each organization or project sponsor was to set up a booth to present their work. The focus was not only on the projects themselves, but also on their structure, quality standards, and transparency. A question grid was developed and will be made available in advance to structure the presentations.

In addition, a data concept for the youth promotion plan was discussed, which could include data on addiction counseling and obesity. The goal is to support the work of the organizations with real social indicators and to plan more specifically.

Conclusion: Weimar Invests in the Future

The political decisions in March 2026 show that Weimar remains active in the field of youth promotion and is relying on long-term planning. With the implementation of the inclusive early childhood development model, the development of the Youth Promotion Plan 2028–2032, and the increased participation of young people, the city of Weimar will not only respond to current challenges, but also think ahead for the future. Investments in early childhood promotion, community-based social work, and youth participation are not only financial, but also social investments in the future of the city.
