Youth Promotion: Participation and Data in Focus
In March 2026, Weimar set a milestone with the Youth Promotion Plan for greater youth participation and preventive youth work. With an online survey of 6th and 7th graders before the Easter holidays and participation workshops in June 2026, the Youth Promotion Plan 2028–2032 will be further detailed. Youth themselves are to be involved in the planning process to directly express their needs and wishes.
Another focus was the development of a data concept that includes substance abuse counseling, obesity, and health check-ups in 3rd grade. The goal is to strengthen preventive measures and promote equal opportunities. During the Exam Day on 28.03.2026, each provider presented their work – a step toward greater transparency and collaboration.
2026 Budget: Balancing Investments and Savings
The 2026 Budget Plan was discussed in several committees in March 2026 and finally approved. The Administrative Budget increased by +€683,268 to €260,674,438, while the Capital Budget decreased by −€350,000 to €51,076,637. The most important changes concern investments in schools, road construction, and energy management.
In the Education and Sports Committee, it was decided to advance the renovation of the Humboldthalle and plan the hall floor at the Pestalozzischule for April/May 2026. In addition, a new primary school district is being introduced: Starting with the school year 2027/28, parents will be able to register their child directly at a municipal primary school of their choice.
Culture and Tourism: Weimar Remains Attractive
Weimar remains a culturally vibrant city in 2026 with a cultural budget of €17 million. The city has decided to no longer advertise the Moscow State Ballet, but instead to consider the Grand Kyiv Ballet for performances. In addition, a central New Year's fireworks display is planned to reduce private pyrotechnic consumption.
Tourism development in 2024 was positive: With 1.3 million overnight stays, 3.9 million day visitors, and a turnover of €297.7 million, Weimar remains a tourist attraction at the heart of Thuringia. A new concept for the Lake Stage was presented: The stage will be moved to land and equipped with environmentally friendly measures to reduce its ecological footprint.
Further Developments: From Bicycle Parking to Budget Flexibility
In the Finance and Real Estate Committee, it was decided to create covered bicycle parking spaces at municipal schools to improve the mobility of students. The Mayor will produce a report on the current equipment by end of 2025 and submit a measures plan by end of Q2 2026.
In addition, the Honor Decoration Regulation of the city of Weimar was approved, which regulates the award of the honor decoration in three categories: Civil Courage, Voluntary Work, and Lifetime Achievement. The new regulation replaces the guidelines from 05.04.2017 and comes into effect the day after the public announcement.
Outlook for April 2026: Preparing for the Future
April 2026 in Weimar will be characterized by the further development of the Youth Promotion Plan, the renovation of the Humboldthalle, and the assessment of alternatives to the New Year's fireworks. In addition, school meals will be awarded in a new tender, and student housing construction will take concrete shape.
Weimar is moving toward a more diverse, participatory, and sustainable urban development. The decisions of March 2026 show that Weimar is ready to place youth, culture, and finances equally in the spotlight – and that for the future.
