Youth Policy in Weimar: Outlook and Developments in April 2026
In April 2026, important decisions and discussions on youth policy were at the center of attention in Weimar. The Youth Welfare Committee dealt with budgetary issues, the Youth Support Plan and the future of the youth centers were specified. The blog provides an overview of the latest developments.
Youth Support in Weimar: Budget, Structures, and Future
The city of Weimar has made a stronger commitment to supporting young people in recent years. This is particularly evident in the work of the Youth Welfare Committee (JHA), which made several important decisions in April 2026. The focus was on budget planning, the evaluation of support projects, and the preparation of structures for the future.
2026 Budget: No Cuts, but Discussions on Increased Expenditures
In April 2026, the JHA made important decisions regarding the youth welfare budget. Unlike in previous years, there were no cuts, which can be interpreted as a positive signal for the stability of youth support. However, discussions on increased expenditures for certain projects, particularly in social work (Gerberstraße) and work with queer youth (Queer e.V.), led to intensive deliberations. These projects are not only important for promoting inclusion, but also for providing psychosocial support to young people.
A proposal to skip a second reading of the budget was unanimously adopted, underscoring the efficiency of the decision-making process. However, individual questions, especially regarding budget reallocations, remained the subject of discussion.
Youth Centers: Structure, Budget, and Planning
Another focus in April 2026 was the planning and future of the youth centers in Weimar. These spaces provide youth from various districts, such as Legefeld, Possendorf, Niedergrunstedt, Tröbsdorf, and Gaberndorf, with a safe place to meet and get involved. Particularly noteworthy is that they are also accessible to children and young people with disabilities.
Each youth center has a budget of 2,300 euros, which is applied for by the local mayor through the youth support program. A special feature is the possibility of reallocating budget funds between youth centers if a district does not fully utilize its budget. This allows for a flexible adjustment to specific needs.
A visit to the youth centers was planned in April to inspect the operations on site and to receive feedback. In addition, the youth support program plans to conduct surveys among students in grades 7 and 8 to better understand their needs.
Youth Support Plan and Structural Changes
Alongside the management of the youth centers, the further development of the Youth Support Plan was also a central focus. During a meeting on April 22, 2026, the regulation of the Youth Welfare Committee was discussed, and new criteria for the Youth Support Plan were defined. In addition, the deadline for submitting applications for the interest expression procedure was adjusted to increase transparency and accessibility.
Another important project is the preparation of an external evaluation of the social space orientation. For this purpose, a working group was established. This evaluation is intended to help assess the effectiveness of existing structures and projects and to make changes where necessary.
The retreat on youth support planning, which took place on March 28, 2026, as well as the planned meeting of the subcommittee on April 22, show that Weimar is pursuing a structured and long-term approach to address the needs of young people as effectively as possible.
Outlook: Stability, Flexibility, and Transparency
The developments of April 2026 show that Weimar is pursuing a stable yet flexible youth policy. Financial support remains at a high level, and structures such as the youth centers and the Youth Support Plan are continuously being developed further. At the same time, transparency is emphasized, for example through the planned public availability of committee meetings or the survey of young people themselves.
In the future, it will be important to implement the results of evaluations and surveys into concrete measures. In this process, the needs of young people with disabilities and queer youth should be given more consideration. Weimar has shown through its work in April 2026 that it is on the right track – now it is important to consistently continue this course.
