Freiberg's Construction Policy in March 2026 – Infrastructure, Energy, and Urban Development

In March 2026, the city of Freiberg set important milestones in urban development. The focus was on the renovation of the sewer system, the expansion of the energy infrastructure, and the adjustment of construction contracts for the train station renovation. In this blog article, we analyze the background, decision-making processes, and implications of these measures.

Sewer Construction and Renovation: Long-Term Investments in Infrastructure

In March 2026, Freiberg's Committee for Construction and Operations decided to renew the combined sewer system in Moritzstraße and the foul and stormwater sewer systems in Himmelfahrtsgasse. These measures are part of a long-term strategy to prepare the city's infrastructure for the future.

The renewal of Moritzstraße will be carried out in two construction phases and awarded to the company Andreas Adam GmbH. The total amount is 710,000 euros including VAT, funded from the liquidity plans of the municipal enterprise FREIBERGER ABWASSERBESEITIGUNG. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2026 and is expected to end in October 2027, with a planned winter break.

Himmelfahrtsgasse will also be renovated, with a budget of 1.655 million euros. The contract was awarded to the company Landschaftsgestaltung Straßen-, Tief- und Wasserbau GmbH. The construction period is limited to the second half of 2026.

These investments are not only necessary to ensure proper wastewater disposal, but also to increase road safety and meet the demands of modern cities.

Energy Infrastructure: Approval of the Battery Storage in Oberschöna

Another key focus of the March meeting was the city of Freiberg's statement on the planning approval procedure for the Wegefarth large-scale battery storage facility in the municipality of Oberschöna. The project, planned in two construction phases, includes the construction of a storage facility with a maximum capacity of 700 megawatts, a substation, and a buried cable connection.

Freiberg, as a neighboring municipality, has not identified any encroachments into its city area and gives its approval to the planning. The advantages of this project are primarily the stabilization of the regional energy grid and the promotion of renewable energy. In addition, the battery storage facility is expected to boost the regional economy and create jobs.

Renovation of the Train Station Building: Flexibility in the Construction Contract

Another central topic was the expansion of the construction contract for the renovation and modernization of the train station building in Freiberg. The city decided to increase the construction contract for mason work on window and door frames by 159,052 euros including VAT. This amendment was necessary because the original scope of services was insufficient.

The funding comes from the 2025/2026 budget plan, with the total compensation now exceeding 407,000 euros. This step shows how flexible municipal construction contracts must be to overcome unexpected challenges during the construction process.

Outlook: Freiberg as a Model City for Sustainable Development

The measures taken in March 2026 show how Freiberg is positioning itself as a model city for sustainable development. The investments in infrastructure and energy are not only technically necessary, but also politically and economically strategic. They contribute to strengthening Freiberg as a liveable and future-ready city.

In the coming months, it will be interesting to observe how the construction measures will be implemented in practice and what effects they will have on the population. In addition, the realization of the battery storage in Oberschöna could provide a new impulse for regional energy policy.
