Freiberg invests in mobility: The purchase of a mobile Pumptrack

In April 2026, Freiberg decided to acquire a mobile Pumptrack for 70,000 EUR. This investment not only reflects a response to the growing demand for sports-related leisure activities, but also careful financial planning. This blog post examines the background, funding, and long-term effects of this decision.

Freiberg invests in mobility: The purchase of a mobile Pumptrack

In recent years, Freiberg has established itself as a dynamic city with a strong commitment to sport and youth leisure. The purchase of a mobile Pumptrack is another indication of how the city is strategically using its resources to promote youth interests while maintaining fiscal discipline. In April 2026, the Administrative and Finance Committee decided to acquire a mobile Pumptrack for approximately 70,000 EUR – a decision that is both sports policy-relevant and financially interesting.

Funding and calculation: Where do the funds come from?

The funding of the Pumptrack is a good example of creative budget planning. The total price of 70,000 EUR is covered by several sources:

  • 40,136.49 EUR comes from the expired balance of the Silberstadt voucher.
  • 18,500 EUR will be provided through sponsorship, with an additional 11,500 EUR in prospect.
  • The remaining self-financing share of 10,000 EUR will be covered by budget funds.

In addition, annual follow-up costs of about 2,000 EUR will occur, mainly for maintenance and administration. The city has already concluded an agreement with the association Rolling Bonez e.V., which will take over the assembly and disassembly from 2027 and will receive 1,000 EUR annually in return. This significantly reduces the long-term costs.

Cost comparison: Rent vs. Purchase vs. Asphalt construction

The decision to purchase a mobile Pumptrack was largely based on a detailed cost analysis. In the past two years, the rental of the Pumptrack cost on average 198 EUR per day, including delivery and assembly/disassembly costs of about 3,000 EUR. With an annual usage of 180 days, the annual costs for renting would already have exceeded the investment costs of the mobile Pumptrack after the second year.

Another comparison shows: An asphalted Pumptrack costs 450,000 EUR and only amortizes after six years. In contrast, the mobile Pumptrack offers flexibility and a lower initial investment, making it particularly attractive for Freiberg.

Long-term effects and community engagement

The mobile Pumptrack will not only expand the city's sports and leisure offerings, but also strengthen the connection between the city and its youth. The association Rolling Bonez e.V. is already closely involved in the project, ensuring sustainable use and maintenance of the Pumptrack. In addition, an external project manager and external helpers will be used for the initial tasks, creating local jobs.

The investment is classified as an investment measure, meaning that it not only covers short-term costs, but also creates long-term benefits. The Pumptrack is assumed to have a service life of ten years, distributing the costs to about 7,000 EUR per year.

Conclusion: A step into the future

The purchase of a mobile Pumptrack is more than an investment in sports infrastructure – it is a sign of Freiberg's willingness to take youth interests seriously while maintaining fiscal discipline. With a carefully planned financing structure, clear cost comparisons, and strong community engagement, the city has made a landmark step. In a time when many municipalities are under financial pressure, Freiberg shows how targeted investments can be implemented without excessive financial requirements.
