Mobility and Transport: Television Tower and Planning for the Future
The Dresden Television Tower, which has not been open to the public for years, came back into focus for the first time in January. The City Council tasked the Mayor with establishing a steering group to develop a concrete reopening strategy. Important issues such as ownership questions, renovation needs, and operating models must be clarified. The results are expected by the end of June 2026 at the latest.
In addition, several local council meetings discussed mobility and transport concepts, including the renovation of St. Petersburg Street and the implementation of cycling infrastructure in Cotta. In Mobschatz, a priority list for road construction in the 2027/2028 twin budget was approved.
Finance and Budget: Investments in Social Services and Education
In January, important decisions were made regarding the financial direction for the coming years. The City Council approved an additional allocation of 43,515 euros for social services in 2025. The funding comes from the social budget and the previous year's liquidity.
For the 2027/2028 twin budget, several districts set priorities: renovations of town halls, planning of community centers, and investments in educational institutions. In individual city districts, smaller projects were also funded, including the support of community helpers, events honoring seniors, and cultural offerings in local community stores.
Culture and Education: Support for Projects and New Impulses
Culture remains a central topic in Dresden. The Cultural Committee allocated a total of 335,625 euros for projects in 2026, including support for literature, music, regional history, and social culture. Particularly noteworthy is the support for the Culture and Neighborhood Center Striesen, which received 67,441 euros in financial security.
A new project in the Old Town – "Kindernachtskaten" – received 3,774 euros in funding. In addition, a proposal for the natural design of school grounds was discussed. In Cotta, a pilot project for youth participation was also presented.
Climate and Environment: Flood Protection and Sustainability
In January, climate protection topics were also in focus. The Committee for Environment and Climate discussed the flood protection plan for the Prießnitz and debated the contamination by PFAS substances in Weixdorf. In addition, a proposal for the achievement of climate neutrality was discussed – a step toward the city's climate goals.
Citizen Participation and Future Visions
Dresden is also relying on increased citizen participation in January 2026. The City Council approved the admissibility of the citizens' initiative "Foot and Cycling Decision Dresden". In addition, the application for BUGA 2033 was initiated – with a feasibility study and an application advisory board.
Overview and Outlook
January 2026 shows that Dresden is developing sustainably on multiple levels: from the revitalization of historical attractions through investments in culture and education to climate protection and citizen participation. The January meetings have shown that the city not only focuses on preserving its structures but also actively invests in the future. February will be exciting to see whether the steering group around the television tower presents first concrete proposals and how the budget planning for the coming years develops.
