Koblenz Committed to Equality: Highlights from the Equality Committee in March 2026

In March 2026, the Equality Committee of the city of Koblenz set new impulses for equality, safety, and inclusion with four central topics. We analyze the background, decisions, and implications of these proposals.

Equality as a Central Field of Urban Development

In an era where social justice and inclusion are increasingly at the center of political work, the city of Koblenz marked an important milestone in March 2026 with the Equality Committee. The central focus of the meeting on March 4, 2026, was four proposals addressing various aspects of equality and safety. The topics ranged from the implementation of international agreements to local initiatives for the queer community.

Implementation of the Istanbul Convention: From International Obligation to Local Action

The Istanbul Convention, a Council of Europe treaty aimed at combating violence against women, has received a new impetus in Koblenz since the beginning of 2025. Anja Kriete, appointed as coordinator for the implementation of the Istanbul Convention and Second Deputy Equality Officer in September 2025, has been coordinating efforts in the region.

The Convention obliges the city to prevent violence, protect victims, and hold perpetrators accountable. In Koblenz, a regional action plan has been developed and is being implemented in close cooperation with civil society actors and the responsible ministries. Particularly noteworthy is the work of the Regional Round Table (RRT) against violence in intimate relationships, which has been analyzing and connecting local structures since January 2026.

The statistics presented by Kriete highlight the urgency of the issue: In 2024, over 265,000 cases of domestic violence were recorded nationwide, with women being more affected. In Koblenz, coordination is a decisive step to strengthen local structures and better support victims.

Queer Center: A Vision for More Safety and Visibility

Another central topic was the presentation of the concept for a Queer Center in Koblenz, developed by the Round Table of the Queer Community. Patricia Pederzani, the city’s Queer Officer, introduced the initiative: a central, barrier-free meeting space that will serve as a safe space, educational institution, and networking hub.

The community currently lacks central access points in Koblenz that are suitable for all age groups. Although the existing location in the Kurt-Esser-House is usable, a dedicated center is considered urgently necessary. Queer individuals often suffer from higher psychological stress, and discrimination in public spaces remains a problem.

The city has committed to providing the space free of charge, with funding to be secured through grants and volunteer structures. The next steps include site selection and structural development – a vision that must now be realized in practice.

Prenatal Counseling Centers: A Look at the Care Situation

The presentation on the work of prenatal counseling centers in Koblenz provided a revealing insight into the local care situation. Representatives from the Diakonie, the Catholic Women’s Social Service, and Pro Familia presented their work and discussed the challenges in accessing medical care.

The ELSA study revealed that many women in Germany – including in Koblenz – lack adequate access to abortion services. In 85 out of 400 districts, accessibility is insufficient, and the situation is particularly dire in Bavaria. In Koblenz, many women face barriers such as slow appointment scheduling, lack of information, and financial obstacles.

The Equality Office is committed to expanding the care network, creating more practices, and strengthening psychosocial support. A particular challenge is the stigmatization of physicians who perform abortions – a topic that also needs to be addressed in politics.

Event Series: Equality in the Public Space

In addition to the proposals, numerous events and initiatives promoting equality were also in the focus. The Equality Office provided information about the “Koblenz wird pink” project, which raises awareness about breast cancer in October, as well as international action days such as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25) or the International Day of the Girl (November 4).

A highlight was the planned event on March 13, 2026, in the Historical Town Hall Hall, which will address International Women’s Day. With the support of the DGB, the University of Koblenz, and verdi Mittelrhein, a discussion on equal rights will take place – another step toward making equality visible in public space.

Outlook: From Policy to Practice

The meeting of the Equality Committee has shown that Koblenz is on the right path to actively promoting equality, safety, and inclusion. The implementation of the Istanbul Convention, the vision of a Queer Center, and the strengthening of prenatal counseling centers are examples of political responsibility that is becoming effective in practice.

However, challenges remain: space shortages, financial constraints, and the stigmatization of issues such as abortion and queer identity. The coming months will show whether the visions in Koblenz will become reality – and how strongly the city will commit to equality.
