Climate Adaptation and the Environment
In March, the city of Koblenz initiated the process of developing a climate adaptation strategy. At a public launch event, the background, funding, and participation opportunities were explained. Citizens were able to submit suggestions for measures such as removing sealed surfaces, greening, blue infrastructure, biodiversity, and fresh air corridors.
An online survey revealed that the majority of respondents rated the green spaces and shade situation in the city as inadequate. Particularly the old town and the central square are considered heat-stressed areas where urgent adaptation measures are required. The Climate Advisory Office Koblenz coordinates the participation process and serves as a contact for questions and feedback.
Waste Management and Sustainability
The Kommunale Servicebetrieb Koblenz has decided how light packaging will be collected in the city in the future. Starting in 2027, collection will take place in yellow bags and be carried out free of charge in the pickup system. In the old town and Ehrenbreitstein, weekly collection remains in place, while in other districts, it will occur every three weeks.
In the Central Workshop, a photovoltaic installation will also be built, which will be expanded by 16 additional DC charging points. The entire installation is planned for the 4th quarter of 2026 and will be funded from the Economic Plan 2026. The investment amounts to approximately 593,000 euros gross.
Safety, Order, and Traffic
The Committee for Safety and Order discussed the current status of the civil alarm plan. The Koblenz Fire Department recorded a total of 2,314 incidents in 2025, including 807 fire incidents and 2,267 assistance calls. The career fire department responded with an average response time of 1:37 minutes, while the volunteer fire department responded in 7:22 minutes.
In addition, three new 30 km/h zones were established in Arenberg (Dahlienweg, Urbarer Straße, Alte Emser Straße / Rheinblick) to ensure traffic calming and the protection of pedestrians and children. This measure was passed unanimously by the City Council.
Equality and Inclusion
The Equal Opportunities Committee has presented a concept for a Queer Center and announced planned events for International Women’s Day. A reading by Alexandra Zykunov on the topic of equal rights is planned for March 13, 2026 in the Historical Town Hall Hall. Admission is free, and registration via the DGB City Association Koblenz is required.
Further planned actions include Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, 2025, and the One Billion Rising Action Course on February 14, 2026. The Office for Equal Opportunities also coordinates the Oriental Women’s Film Festival and World Girls’ Day in cooperation with the Odeon Cinema.
Conclusion and Outlook
March 2026 in Koblenz was marked by a number of decisions in the areas of climate, environment, safety, waste management, and equality. The city has shown that it is responding to structural challenges and also initiating future-oriented projects. In the coming months, the focus will be on the implementation of the climate adaptation strategy, the commissioning of photovoltaic systems, and the further implementation of the full-day support law.
