Sports Development in Andernach: Renovation, Conceptual Planning, and Support

In March 2026, Andernach focused on key sports policy issues: the application for federal funding for sports facilities, the future of the stadium, and support for sports clubs. An overview.

Sports Policy in Andernach: March 2026 in Focus

In March 2026, Andernach thoroughly addressed the future of its sports infrastructure. The Sports Committee met on March 12 to discuss the current renovation application, the stadium's conceptual planning, and a club grant. These topics illustrate the close connection between the city's sports policy and the development of the local community.

Federal Program: Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities

The city of Andernach is applying under the federal program "Sanierung kommunaler Sportstätten" (Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities) for funding of up to 333 million euros. The program aims to renovate sports facilities and create future-proof sports infrastructure. In the city's project outline, the following measures are presented:

  • Renovation of the existing artificial turf
  • Construction of a new artificial turf pitch
  • Renewal of the tartan running track
  • Installation of a new floodlighting system

The deadline for applications was fiercely contested nationwide: over 7.5 billion euros in total was requested, with a funding volume of only 333 million euros. With more than 3,600 applications submitted, the competition is intense. The decision on funding is planned for after Easter 2026. If Andernach is successful, concrete implementation steps and financial implications will be presented in detail to the Sports Committee.

Stadium Development: Planning for the Future

The first Round Table on Sports discussed the future development of the stadium, which no longer meets current requirements due to its age and high usage. The discussions centered on several key topics:

  • Pitch Demand: Due to high demand, multiple teams must train simultaneously on one pitch.
  • Artificial Turf vs. Natural Grass: While an artificial turf pitch could provide more training time, a natural grass pitch is desired for large athletics events.
  • School Needs: Schools pointed out outdated facilities, underlining the need for comprehensive renovation.
  • Infrastructure: Additional parking spaces and better accessibility are being further examined.
  • Strategic Planning: Sports facility development should be strategically planned, and regional networking should be pursued.

The city plans to incorporate the existing sports facility concept into further planning. Another meeting of the Round Table is scheduled for May 2026.

Club Support: Andernach Gymnastics Club Receives Grant

The Sports Committee supported the gymnastics club Turnverein Andernach 1867 e.V. with a grant for the purchase of new sports equipment. The club applied for funds for equipment worth 2,294 euros, including a Gymnastics Forza Elite Bundle, a Kids 60 Springboard, and a Wedge Mat. The club will receive a grant of 30% of the eligible costs—up to 688.20 euros. The funds come from the sports promotion budget and will be disbursed after submission of the invoice documentation.

The grant is intended to support the qualitative further development of the training offer, especially in the youth gymnastics sector. The gymnastics club justified the application by stating that the existing equipment is insufficient for proper sports operations.

Outlook: Sports Policy as a Key to Community Development

The discussions and decisions in March 2026 show that Andernach sees sports as a central component of its community development. The application for federal funding, the forward-looking stadium planning, and the support for local clubs highlight the multifaceted nature of sports policy challenges.

The coming months will be decisive: If the application is successful, the city will need to quickly move into implementation. At the same time, stadium planning will advance further, and additional club applications may follow. Sports in Andernach are in motion—and the future of sports facilities and clubs is being actively shaped.
