Andernach: Youth Politics in Action – What's Happening in April 2026
In April 2026, Andernach focused more on youth-oriented offerings and digital communication. The Youth Advisory Board discussed key projects, including the revitalization of Breslauer Platz and the establishment of a municipal WhatsApp channel. An overview of the most important developments.
Youth Politics in Andernach: How the City Involves Its Young Residents
Youth politics is a challenge in many cities – Andernach is trying to take an active approach. In April 2026, several decisions and initiatives were made that illustrate how the city is striving to incorporate the interests of young people more strongly into its planning. The focus was on digital communication, participation, and municipal infrastructure.
The WhatsApp Channel: New Paths in Municipal Communication
In April 2026, an official municipal WhatsApp channel was launched to complement traditional forms of communication. The channel is specifically intended for younger population groups who do not regularly use social media or municipal websites. Each municipal department has appointed a responsible person to manage and update the channel.
The channel will be operated for a six-month pilot period to test its effectiveness. In the Youth Advisory Board meeting on April 27, 2026, the channel was presented and discussed as another step toward participation. The advantage: Young Andernachers can now receive direct and uncomplicated information – from events to current developments in the city.
Breslauer Platz: A New Meeting Point for Youth
Another highlight of the April discussions was the planned revitalization of Breslauer Platz as part of the Honor Day on May 23, 2026. The Youth Advisory Board advocated for using the square more as a meeting point for youth. The plans include new seating areas, wildflower meadows, nesting boxes, and insect hotels. In addition, raised beds, espalier fruit trees, and a "Food Tree" are planned as part of the "Edible City" concept.
Another highlight: a new public barbecue area, a drinking fountain, and a space for a sports box. On the Honor Day itself, an interactive area is planned where young people can actively participate – for example, in hands-on activities or catering. The day will end with a volunteer festival honoring volunteer work in the city.

Successful Easter Holiday Program and Preparation for the Summer Holidays
The Easter holiday program of the open youth work was also reviewed in the April meeting of the Youth Advisory Board. The target group was young people from secondary school, who could participate in various activities daily from 10:00 to 18:00 in the first week of the holidays. Offers ranged from creative workshops such as decorating Easter eggs and photography projects to construction projects. A focus was placed on community-building activities, including an overnight stay in the second week of the holidays.
The last day took the young people to Salto, where they could spend time together. The feedback was uniformly positive, and the summer holiday program is already in preparation. The open youth center also offered flexible participation options starting at 13:00, which was valued as an additional advantage.
Outlook: Youth Politics as a Central Element of Urban Development
The decisions made in April 2026 show that Andernach takes youth politics seriously and uses both traditional and modern formats. The WhatsApp channel is a step toward digital participation, while the revitalization of Breslauer Platz offers a physical response to the needs of young people. At the same time, the Easter holiday program demonstrates that structured leisure activities are well accepted.
In the future, it will be important to analyze the evaluations of the WhatsApp channel and other municipal offerings in order to further optimize youth politics. With the Honor Day in May 2026 and further projects in the planning phase, Andernach has good prospects of positioning itself as a youth-friendly city.
