Sport Policy in Wuppertal: Renovations, Rehabilitation Sports, and AI in April 2026

In April 2026, Wuppertal focused on key decisions regarding its sports infrastructure and promotion. The Sports Committee approved renovation measures for several swimming pools, discussed rehabilitation sports offerings, and laid the first groundwork for the introduction of AI in the Schwimmoper. An overview.

Important sports policy decisions in April 2026

In April 2026, Wuppertal's Sports Committee was highly active during a public session. The discussions and decisions concerned, among other things, renovation projects at several outdoor swimming pools, the future of rehabilitation sports offerings, and the use of AI technology in the Schwimmoper. The decisions show how the city is further developing its sports infrastructure and also relying on technological innovations.

Renovation measures at several pools

The renovation of Wuppertal's swimming pools was a central topic of the meeting. It was decided to finance the second construction phase of the renovation of the Uellendahl Municipal Bath with a budget of 5.72 million euros. This includes extensive work on swimming pools, piping networks, ventilation systems, and the hall ceiling. The conversion to LED technology will cost an additional 200,000 euros and is part of the city's climate protection strategy.

The Mirke outdoor swimming pool is also in the spotlight: a natural swimming pool with biological water treatment is being built here. The costs for the renovation and parking lot improvements amount to 270,000 euros, funded from the "Sports Promotion" product group. The work, including the removal of PCB-containing pool coatings, is well underway.

Rehabilitation Sports Offerings: Cancellation and Demands

The city of Wuppertal's rehabilitation sports offerings were discussed in April 2026. Following the closure of the Schwimmoper swimming pool and the relocation of rehabilitation sports to the Röttgen Bath, a reduction in the offering followed due to staffing shortages. After an adjustment to only once a week on Wednesdays, the offering was finally completely discontinued in December 2025. Reason: the planned construction work in 2026.

In this situation, the advisory board for people with disabilities called for an alternative location, an extension of prescriptions, personnel strengthening, and a mid-term expansion of the rehabilitation sports offering. The Sports Committee rejected a proposal for the provision of rehabilitation sports offerings, thus continuing the discussion about the future of this important offering.

AI in the Schwimmoper: Security through Technology

Another innovation in Wuppertal's sports policy was the introduction of an AI-based monitoring system in the Schwimmoper. With an investment of 200,000 euros, dangerous situations such as motionless persons in the water are to be detected in real time. The system supports the supervisory staff but does not replace it. Use is carried out in accordance with the GDPR and data minimization and exclusively for security purposes. The proposal was jointly submitted by the SPD and CDU.

Funding and Budget Planning

Several sports policy measures are anchored in the 2026/2027 budget. 60,000 euros from the fire department fund were allocated for the support of privately operated swimming pools. The distribution takes place according to a criteria catalog, with the Bandwirkerbad Ronsdorf receiving 30,000 euros, the Eckbusch and Vohwinkel outdoor swimming pools each receiving 15,000 euros. These funds are mainly used for renovation work on gutters, pool linings, and sanitary areas.

The product groups for sports promotion, swimming pool operations, and outdoor sports facilities show clear changes. Sports promotion will be reduced from 1.8 million euros to 1.0 million euros by 2027. Outdoor sports facilities will be budgeted for investment from 2026, which should enable long-term planning.

Outlook

The sports policy decisions in April 2026 show that Wuppertal is further developing its sports infrastructure—both in terms of construction measures and technological innovations. However, the challenges in the field of rehabilitation sports remain and will require more attention and resources in the future. With the renovation of the swimming pools and the introduction of AI in the Schwimmoper, Wuppertal is setting impulses to increase safety and benefits for citizens.
