Education Policy in Wachtberg: Expansion, Renovation, and Integration
In April 2026, Wachtberg focused on numerous developments in the field of education. In addition to the renovation of schools and the introduction of new full-day school concepts, integration measures and agreements on volunteer work and sports were also discussed. The Education and Society Committee played a central role in these efforts.
Education Policy in Wachtberg: Expansion, Renovation, and Integration
The education policy in Wachtberg proved to be a dynamic and multifaceted field of action in April 2026. The meeting of the Education and Society Committee on April 23 addressed numerous topics, covering structural, pedagogical, and social aspects. Central to the discussion were the renovation of existing schools, the expansion of full-day schools, and the integration of refugee children into the education sector.
Renovation and Expansion of Schools
The renovation of the KGS Villip was one of the central topics. The architecture firm "Raum für Architektur" presented comprehensive plans, including the renovation of the teacher's wing and the expansion of the gymnasium. A funding application under the federal sports facility program has already been submitted and could release up to 2.3 million euros in funding. This investment is not only a response to age-related damage but also a step to prepare the school for future challenges.
Another project is the renovation of the Berkum School Center. Here, a participation process was initiated to involve the school community in the planning. The goal is to create a climate-adapted and barrier-free environment that meets both pedagogical and ecological demands. The funding comes from the 2025/2026 budget, and the tender documents are being prepared.
Full-Day Schools and Agreements in the Rhein-Sieg District
April also saw decisions on the implementation of the right to full-day childcare for elementary school children. Wachtberg plans to enter into an agreement with seven other municipalities and the Rhein-Sieg District to jointly expand the infrastructure for open full-day schools. This agreement is a milestone in fulfilling the requirements of § 24 (4) SGB VIII n.F. and ensuring that children starting in the school year 2026/2027 can receive high-quality care.
An example of investment in this area is the GGS/OGS Niederbachem. A resolution has been passed to initiate a tender procedure for the equipping of four classrooms. The cost amounts to 112,000 euros, enabling the dual use of the rooms for lessons and full-day school activities.
Integration and Education for Refugee Children
The integration of refugee children into the education sector is another key focus. Currently, 47 children and young people are enrolled in schools in Wachtberg. The municipality has also provided accommodations for refugees, in which 11 children are cared for in daycare facilities. This task is not only a humanitarian challenge but also an educational policy challenge, as integration into regular classes and language support remain central issues.
Sports Allowance and Support for Associations
In addition to education policy, the field of sports also played a role. The sports allowance was used to support associations such as SC Villip e.V. and the Reit- und Fahrverein Oberbachem e.V. SC Villip received 3,930 euros for the purchase of new goalposts, while the riding club received 11,210 euros for the renewal of the riding hall track. These measures not only contribute to the improvement of sports infrastructure but also support mass sports and youth activities.
Outlook and Challenges
In 2027, further investments and reforms in education policy can be expected. The administration plans to provide funding for a new school development plan that will extend until 2030. In addition, the continuation of the integration working group is planned, which also fulfills a criterion for the "intercultural orientation" seal. This development shows that Wachtberg is not only responding to current challenges but also pursuing long-term strategies to advance education and integration.
