Wachtberg: Energy Strategy and Local Heat Supply in April 2026

In April 2026, Wachtberg is placing greater emphasis on regional energy solutions. Municipal heat planning and the expansion of decentralized energy sources such as microgrids and balcony power plants are moving to the forefront. At the same time, infrastructure measures for heavy rainfall are being optimized.

Municipal Energy Strategy: Between Microgrids and Decentralized Heat

The energy policy of the municipality of Wachtberg has become significantly more refined in April 2026. With a focus on municipal heat planning and adaptation to climate change and energy cost developments, urban planners are pursuing a mixed strategy combining microgrids and decentralized heat supply. Particularly the district of Werthhoven is in the spotlight.

Microgrid in Werthhoven: Opportunity or Risk?

A section of Werthhoven has been identified as a suitable area for a microgrid. Unlike other focus areas, a feasibility study is deliberately not being conducted here. Instead, the Energy Agency Rhein-Sieg is being brought in to assess the local potential. The idea of a citizens’ energy cooperative as the operator of the microgrid demonstrates the engagement of the local population.

Nevertheless, the municipality is pursuing a differentiated strategy: For the rest of Werthhoven, a decentralized heat supply is recommended, indicating the heterogeneity of the urban structure. This could also be linked to the lack of a feasibility study – the municipality is relying on local initiatives and pilot projects to ensure sustainable energy supply.

Infrastructure for Sustainability: Heavy Rain and Energy

In April 2026, Wachtberg is not only active in energy planning but also in adapting to the impacts of climate change. Stormwater protection measures at the street culvert "Alter Hof" and in the Fuchskaule area have been reinforced. Drainage gutters and other measures are intended to divert surface water and prevent flooding. The municipality has four stormwater advisors who provide on-site information on current risks and tips for personal preparedness.

In addition, a sponsored balcony power plant has been installed at the Pössemer Treff, and the possibility of expansion to a roof-mounted PV system is being examined. This measure is part of a broader strategy to strengthen local energy sources and involve citizens in the energy supply.

Citizen Dialogue: The "Energy Dialogues" as a Link

To involve the population in the energy strategy, Wachtberg has launched the event series "Energy Dialogues." This provides regular information on energy and neighborhood topics and promotes exchange between citizens, politics, and energy experts. The dialogue is a crucial step in building trust in the new energy solutions and preventing resistance.

Outlook: From Planning to Implementation

In April 2026, Wachtberg has defined a clear energy and climate strategy. The combination of microgrids, decentralized heat supply, and citizen participation shows that the municipality is not only relying on technical innovations but also on social acceptance. The coming months will show how this strategy is implemented in practice – and whether Wachtberg can serve as a model for other municipalities with this mix of planning, pilot projects, and citizen engagement.
