Viersen March 2026: Budget, Kindergartens, and Urban Planning in Focus

In March 2026, Viersen focused on key budget decisions, improvements to kindergartens, and urban development projects. Learn about the measures that were approved and how they affect you as a resident.

Budget, Kindergartens, and Planning: March 2026 in Viersen

What Was Important This Month

  • ✅ The 2026 budget was passed by a majority vote – despite political divisions.
  • 🧒 An additional 20,000 euros for kindergartens and youth welfare: The funding for plusKITAs was extended.
  • 🏘️ Residential planning in Süchteln: The land use plan was amended to allow for new residential development.
  • 🛌 Sauna at the city bath: The reopening was approved by a large majority.
  • 🐶 New dog parks in planning: 20,000 euros allocated for the planning of up to three new areas.

2026 Budget: Majority Approval Despite Controversies

In March 2026, the municipal council approved the 2026 budget with 13 yes votes and 10 no votes. The budget ordinance, by contrast, was adopted unanimously. Key investments and projects were financially secured:

  • 15,000 € for the project “Viersener Natur- und Kulturpunkte” (Viersen Nature and Culture Points)
  • 20,000 € for solar-powered information displays
  • 20,000 € for the planning of up to three new dog parks
  • 20,000 € for youth support projects

Furthermore, the staffing plan for 2026 was passed, allocating 319.5 positions for civil servants and 1,016.0 positions for other employees. Notably, special project positions for the digitization of building records were approved with a reservation clause.

Kindergartens and Youth Welfare: Expansion of Childcare Offers

In March 2026, the Youth Welfare Committee approved the updated outlook plan for kindergartens and daycare, as well as concrete childcare offers for the 2026/27 kindergarten year. A key decision was the allowance, in justified individual cases, to assign children over the age of three to under-three (U3) groups – a flexible regulation that emerged in response to demand.

In addition, it was decided to support certain day-care centers as plusKITAs, with the funding running until July 31, 2027. The administration will also provide expert support in implementing the new Children's Education Act.

A citizen's request for the construction of a playground at Waldnieler Straße was also announced. The petition, signed by 84 residents, will be addressed in upcoming council sessions.

Urban Development and Land Use: Plans for Süchteln and Kronenfeld

In the Committee for Urban Development and Planning, the 94th amendment to the land use plan in Viersen-Süchteln was passed unanimously (with 2 abstentions). The zoning plan No. 389 “Rheinstraße / Auf dem Baer” was also adopted – with 16 yes votes, 1 no vote, and 2 abstentions.

The amendments affect plot 58 in field 69, which will be designated for residential development in the future. The new street in the zoning plan is named “Am Salbruch.” The planning process took into account the climate adaptation strategy (KLAK) and soil protection regulations. There are no financial or personnel implications.

In addition, the 94th amendment to the land use plan “Kronenfeld – Greefsallee – Mühlenstraße” was passed unanimously with 4 abstentions. The public consultation period took place in autumn 2025, and the comments from the LVR on the protection of archaeological sites are not yet fully available.

Overview: Budget, Kindergartens, and Urban Development – the Three Pillars of March Politics

In March 2026, three central topics dominated the political agenda in Viersen: the budget, the expansion of kindergartens, and urban planning. These topics are closely interlinked – the budget funds the expansion of kindergartens, the expansion of kindergartens is part of family policy, and urban planning shapes the city’s future structure.

The political debates around the budget show that Viersen has a broad spectrum of positions – from clear majorities to closely contested decisions. However, the investments in plusKITAs and youth welfare also demonstrate that there is a consensus in the city on issues concerning the future of the younger generation.

Conclusion with a Look Ahead

March 2026 was a high point for budget planning, kindergarten improvements, and urban development in Viersen. The approved measures show that the city is looking to the future – with investments in childcare, youth welfare, and housing. In April, the focus will be on the implementation of these projects – particularly in kindergartens and the planned dog parks. Residents can look forward to increased involvement in urban development topics – and perhaps also to the reopening of the sauna at the city bath.
