Traffic Policy in Viersen: Pilot Projects, Roundabout Debate, and Local Mobility in April 2026

In April 2026, several key traffic policy topics were in focus in Viersen: a pilot operation of bus line 089, the debate over a roundabout on Hindenburgstraße, and recent developments in local mobility management. An overview.

Mobility Developments in Viersen: Focus on Pilot Projects and Traffic Planning

In April 2026, the city of Viersen devoted considerable attention to urban mobility issues. Several decisions were made in the committees that affect both local mobility and public transport. In addition, the CDU Council faction was actively involved in the debate on structural traffic improvements, particularly in the area of Hindenburgstraße.

Pilot Operation of Bus Line 089: More Local Transport in the Mackenstein Industrial Park

One of the central decisions in April concerned the adjustment of bus line 089 in the Mackenstein industrial park. The Committee for Order and Road Traffic approved a two-year pilot operation aimed at improving public transport access to the industrial park. Operated by NEW mobil and aktiv Viersen GmbH, the line will temporarily be extended to reach more companies and enable shorter commutes for employees.

The pilot phase includes the establishment of provisional stops, including a new stop at the "Gewerbering" in the eastern part of the industrial park, currently without comprehensive barrier-free access. The pilot phase is part of the Mobility Concept Viersen 2040 and is expected to run until the timetable change after the summer holidays in 2026. The city anticipates that the pilot will involve a manageable additional financial burden, which it considers an investment in a future-proof transport system.

Roundabout Debate: CDU Motion for Hindenburgstraße Remains Without Consequences

Another focus of the April session was the CDU Council faction's motion requesting a re-examination of the possibility of a roundabout at the intersection of Hindenburgstraße and Lobbericher Straße. The CDU justified the motion by citing planned demolition work on an adjacent property, which could create new planning prerequisites.

However, the administration made it clear that the technical prerequisites for a roundabout at this location are not met. Traffic volumes are unevenly distributed, and the geometric conditions as well as the topography speak against a roundabout. In addition, part of the area is in private ownership, which raises structural and legal challenges. While the CDU's request was noted, no further examination will be carried out.

Local Mobility and Road Safety: Many Smaller Issues in Focus

In addition to the larger projects, numerous smaller issues of traffic planning and safety were also discussed in the committee meetings. Discussions included the installation of interactive displays to raise traffic awareness on Bruchstraße and Dülkener Straße. Council members also criticized the poor traffic light timing at Freiheitsstraße and complained about missing traffic signs in some areas.

The administration assured that it would review the cleaning of glass containers and install missing traffic signs in consultation with the state road authority NRW. Furthermore, the collaboration with the volunteer fire department during local festivals was discussed, with legal restrictions regarding the fire department's availability clarified.

Outlook: Pilot Projects as Precursors to Future Mobility Strategies

April 2026 shows that Viersen is actively working on the further development of its traffic policy on multiple levels. The pilot operation of bus line 089 is a clear signal of a stronger integration of public transport in industrial areas, aligning with climate goals and the objective of sustainable mobility.

In contrast, the debate over the roundabout at Hindenburgstraße highlights the limits of structural measures when technical and legal conditions are against them. For the future, it remains to be seen whether the results of the pilot project on line 089 will lead to a permanent adjustment and whether other pilot projects in other industrial areas will follow.
