Traffic and Mobility in Remscheid: Road Construction, Greening, and Digital Innovation in Focus
In February 2026, Remscheid will focus on comprehensive traffic policy themes: road construction projects, climate protection through greening, and digital pilot projects for waste management will be central.
Mobility and Infrastructure: Remscheid’s Traffic Policy in February 2026
The city of Remscheid has increasingly committed to a climate-friendly and future-oriented traffic and mobility policy in recent years. In February 2026, it becomes evident that these efforts are being concretely implemented – both through construction measures and innovative pilot projects.
Road Construction and Infrastructure: Millions Invested for the Future
In 2026, extensive road construction projects will be at the center of attention in Remscheid. The Pavement Renewal Program 2026, which costs around 4.2 million euros in total, includes both individual measures and comprehensive rehabilitation. The Road and Bridge Construction Department (TBR 5) is primarily responsible for implementation.
Key projects in focus:
- Pavement renewals in 25 streets, including Albrecht-Thaer-Straße, Röntgenstraße, and Schulstraße, with a volume of approximately 1.2 million euros.
- Bus lane at Am Markt, costing 360,000 euros, funded from the budget INV 128048.
- Lenneper Straße, whose renovation is already underway and with a cost of 2.245 million euros, represents the largest project among the planned measures.
The construction works are distributed across various time windows – from May to August for pavement renewals, and from July to November for further road construction projects. The goal is to stabilize the traffic infrastructure in the long term and optimize traffic flow.
Greening and Climate Protection: The Fight for More Green in the City
Another central aspect of traffic policy in Remscheid is the increased greening of the city. The urban tree concept aims to reduce the number of streets without tree cover. Currently, 258 km of the 512 km of city streets have no tree cover – a number that is to be reduced through targeted measures.
New trees are to be planted especially along major traffic axes such as Lenneper Straße, Kölner Straße, and Freiheitstraße. The planting pit recommendations of the FLL (German Society for Landscape Research, Development and Construction) are strictly followed to ensure the long-term survival of the trees. A minimum of 12 m³ planting pit is required for small-crowned trees, and 24 m³ for medium-sized trees.
The "Remscheid Urban Tree List" is based on national examples and the Climate Species Matrix to select robust, climate-resilient species. In the long term, a positive tree balance is the goal – not only for the climate, but also for the quality of life for citizens.
Digital Innovations: Smart Bins as a Pilot Project
In addition to physical infrastructure, Remscheid is also relying on digital solutions. A pilot project to test smart bins in the city center is part of this strategy. The aim is to control the emptying frequency based on the fill level in order to prevent overfilling and to optimize the use of resources.
The CDU faction has submitted a request to obtain the TBR's evaluation of the project. The focus is on experiences with the technology, measurable improvements in cleanliness and efficiency, and the possibility of expansion to other locations. In addition, it is being examined whether digital solutions can also be used for glass, paper, and textile recycling containers.
The presentation of the pilot project is scheduled for the meeting of the Committee for Safety, Order and Cleanliness on February 3, 2026, as well as the Operating Committee of TBR on February 10, 2026.
Conclusion: A Mobility Strategy in Transition
Remscheid's traffic policy in February 2026 shows that the city is actively engaged in both physical infrastructure and climate-friendly and innovative solutions. The combination of road construction projects, greening concepts, and digital pilot projects underlines the approach of sustainable, future-oriented urban planning. In the coming months, it will be particularly interesting to review the results of the smart bin pilot project and to observe how the planned construction measures will change the daily lives of Remscheid residents.
