In March 2026, Remscheid focused on numerous decisions in the areas of governance and administration. From personnel decisions and financial approvals to structural changes in the municipal administration – an overview of the most important topics from the district committees and the city council.
Governance and Administration in Remscheid: Decisions and Structures in March 2026
The city of Remscheid made decisive measures in the field of governance and administration in several meetings of the district committees and the city council in March 2026. With personnel decisions, financial approvals, and structural adjustments, the administration responded to current challenges and set guidelines for the future.
Personnel and Structure
One of the first decisions in the district committee concerned the appointment of the Secretary. Ramona Hengst was unanimously appointed Secretary of District Committee 2 – Süd, supported by Silke Eller, Tabitha Henn, Annette Mertens, Michael Müller, and Carina Valenti as deputy secretaries. This personnel decision underlines the continuity and stability in the administrative structure.
At the city council level, personnel decisions were also made. Kurt Peter Friese, Wolf Lüttinger, and Sebastian Thiel were appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Remscheid City Savings Bank. In addition, Sven Wiertz, Andre Kossek, and Jens Bosbach were appointed as representatives of the city of Remscheid in the GEWAG. These decisions show the focus on broad, cross-party representation in key positions.
Financial Approvals and Budget Decisions
March brought several significant budget decisions. In the city council meeting on March 12, 2026, unplanned funding in the millions was approved. Thus, 2.5 million euros were made available for statutory transfer payments under the SGB VIII, 5.9476 million euros for the school site "Bökerhöhe," and 350,000 euros for technology-assisted information processing were released.
In addition, the renovation of Schloss Burg was funded with 1.2 million euros, and the establishment of the emergency station in Lüttringhausen received 160,000 euros for 2025 and 1.9 million euros for 2026. These decisions show how the city sets priorities and at the same time ensures the financing of critical infrastructure.
Governance Decisions and Structural Changes
Another focus was on structural changes in the administration. The sale of the city of Remscheid's shares in the RWE Shareholders GmbH to the Remscheid Stadtwerke GmbH was decided with a large majority (44 yes, 11 no). This step marks a clear orientation of the Stadtwerke as an independent actor in the energy sector.
In addition, the founding of a gGmbH for Schloss Burg was decided in cooperation with Wuppertal, Solingen, and the Schlossbauverein. This initiative underlines the inter-municipal exchange and the joint use of cultural resources.
Communication Strategies and Citizen Participation
The district committee also focused on improved communication strategies. An unanimously approved motion provides for the district committee to be informed early about changes in traffic management. In addition, a motion was submitted to accelerate the traffic study at Intzeplatz, which indicates the need for transparency and quick response to citizens' concerns.
In the city council meeting, a secret ballot motion by council member Gräbner was rejected as the quorum was not reached. This emphasizes the importance of formal procedures and democratic rules in the municipal administration.
Outlook
The governance decisions of March 2026 show that Remscheid remains active on different levels and prepares for challenges such as infrastructure, financing, and citizen participation. Personnel decisions, budget approvals, and structural changes not only represent short-term solutions, but also long-term planning for sustainable urban development.
