Sports Policy in Neuss: Investments, Renovations, and Participation in Focus
In February 2026, Neuss made important decisions for the future of sports. The Sports Committee discussed investments in sports facilities, renovation needs, and the future of the ice sports hall.
Neuss invests in sports facilities and future visions
In February 2026, the Sports Committee of the city of Neuss engaged intensively in the development of sports policy. Numerous investment projects, renovation measures, and political motions reflected the high importance of sports in municipal planning. Particularly noticeable was the focus on infrastructure: from artificial turf pitches, through ice sports halls, to sports boat harbors – the city of Neuss is making targeted investments in the future of sports.
Investments in sports facilities: Artificial turf and renovations
A central topic in the Sports Committee was the conversion of the Tennenplatz at the district sports facility in Grimlinghausen into an artificial turf pitch. A decision was passed unanimously with an investment of 250,000 euros, with only three votes against it. The project is part of the sports development plan and aims to ensure the long-term attractiveness of sports facilities.
Alongside the adaptation of sports areas, renovation measures were also on the agenda. In particular, the ice sports hall in Südpark was the subject of intense discussions. Originally budgeted at 5.1 million euros, the renovation costs increased to 5.824 million euros. The CDU called for a clear plan for the future of the hall, including the renovation of the flat roof, sanitary areas, and technical facilities, as well as the creation of barrier-free access. In addition, the feasibility of a mobile ice surface is being examined to ensure operations during renovation work.
Support for sports clubs and events
The Sports Committee also addressed the financial support for sports clubs. Approximately 20,000 euros were approved in the form of grants for outstanding sports events, including the Neuss Summer Night Run, the Quirinus Cup, and the Neuss Integration Run. Particularly noteworthy is the support for the Integration Run by DJK Rheinkraft Neuss, which received 900 euros – a sign of the importance of sports as a factor of integration.
Project work was also supported. The project "Neuss makes mobile" by the city sports association and the inclusive project "Movement knows no age" were examined and placed in the focus of sports policy work. In addition, subsidies for youth and project work in 2025 were approved.
Political motions and discussions
The sports policy debates were initiated by several motions. B90/Die Grünen asked about the cost development of the dredging of the Neuss sports harbor, which had increased from 200,000 euros in the early 2010s to 930,000 euros. In addition, a long-term concept for the sports harbor was demanded, which would also consider desilting every 10–15 years. The SPD requested a status report on important sports projects such as the Children and Youth Sports Center Erfttal and the renovation of clubhouses.
The CDU, on the other hand, focused on the future of the ice sports hall. A cooperation model with the Alpenpark Neuss and the NBE (Neusser Bäder- und Eissport GmbH) was examined but not pursued further. Instead, an updated renovation plan is now being pursued.
Outlook: Sports development planning and sports summit
Another important topic was the continuation of sports development planning. The sports summit is used as a "kick-off event" for the new planning process, which will include schools, youth, social issues, inclusion, and integration. The goal is to promote an inclusive sports culture that makes "Sports and Movement for All" the central motto.
In March 2026, an online information event is planned to report on current projects and developments in sports policy. In addition, the district sports facility Holzheim will be further developed, including the renovation of the changing rooms and the referee changing rooms.
Conclusion: Sports as a central building block of urban development
February 2026 shows that sports in Neuss is not only a leisure topic but a central building block of urban development. With investments in sports facilities, support for clubs, and a focus on inclusion and integration, the city is pursuing sustainable sports policy. The discussions in the Sports Committee underline the need to continue investing in infrastructure and participation in the future – because sports is more than just movement, it is part of the social and cultural identity of Neuss.
