Urban Development in Mülheim: March 2026 in Focus
In March 2026, the city of Mülheim engaged intensively with topics of urban care, traffic planning, and tree management. An overview of the most important decisions and developments in the field of urban development.
Urban Development in Mülheim: The Most Important Decisions in March 2026
Mülheim an der Ruhr addressed urban development issues intensively in March 2026. Particularly in the district councils, decisions were made that influence both the city's traffic planning and its green spaces. Below is an analytical report on the central topics.
1. Trees in Focus: Felling and Replacement on Tilsiter Straße
The felling of three linden trees on Tilsiter Straße was a central topic in District Council 1. The reason for the measure was the planned road expansion according to the zoning plan G 14, which would significantly affect the root area of the trees. Reports and test excavations indicated that the structural safety of the trees could no longer be guaranteed.
After an in-depth debate, the district council decided in favor of felling the trees—by a majority, with one opposing vote and three abstentions. As a replacement, two columnar oaks, one silver maple, and two linden trees were proposed. However, replanting could not take place directly on Tilsiter Straße, as a planned location was unsuitable due to gas lines. Instead, replanting was considered at the Oppspring, after ecological aspects were also examined there.
The decision represented a compromise between urban planning and ecological interests, with the need for the road expansion deemed to take precedence.
2. Traffic Trials and Speed Controls: New Measures for Traffic Calming
Another focus was traffic planning in the districts. The district council instructed the administration to conduct speed measurements on the street "An den Buchen". The goal was to create a data basis for future measures such as road modifications or speed limits. The measurement was to take place before the Easter holidays.
In addition, a traffic trial was decided for the streets Kuhlendahl, An den Buchen, and Vonscheidts Hof. As part of this, the streets Kuhlendahl and Vonscheidts Hof are to be converted into pseudo-one-way streets in order to reduce through traffic and increase pedestrian safety. The administration has already collected traffic data, and a further survey is planned for June 2026.
The measure is initially designed as a traffic trial, which allows for flexible adjustment or reversal. Approximately 3,000 vehicles use the affected streets daily—a figure that underscores the urgency of the measures.
3. Parking Situation and Construction Projects in the Oppspring Area
Another topic was the parking situation at the Oppspring intersection. The district council instructed the administration to examine the establishment of additional parking spaces—possibly with parking discs—particularly in the area of the former railway line of the disused Ruhrbahn. The aim was to ease the parking shortage at this highly used intersection.
The administration is to report on the feasibility and costs of the measure at one of the next meetings. The decision was unanimous, showing that the need to improve the parking situation is widely acknowledged.
Future-Oriented Urban Development: Challenges and Opportunities
The decisions of March 2026 show that Mülheim an der Ruhr is actively addressing the challenges of urban development. Whether in the felling of trees within construction projects, the planning of traffic trials, or the search for solutions to parking shortages—the city is walking a sensitive balancing act between urban planning necessities and ecological and social responsibility.
The coming months will show whether the planned traffic trials and plantings will actually contribute to improving the quality of life in Mülheim. The district councils will play a central role in monitoring the measures and making corrections if needed.
