Mobility in Mülheim: New Directions in January Planning
In January 2026, Mülheim made several decisions in the area of mobility that affect traffic, safety, and infrastructure. The focus was on parking supply, bicycle infrastructure, school safety, and investments in road construction.
Mobility in Mülheim: From Parking Spaces to School Safety
In January 2026, Mülheim placed an intense focus on mobility issues. Numerous motions and planning proposals show that the city is actively addressing a wide range of topics related to traffic, safety, and infrastructure. Particularly noteworthy are measures concerning parking supply, the expansion of bicycle infrastructure, and the improvement of school safety.
Parking Supply: Two New Garages for Crime Prevention
A motion was submitted for the construction of two multi-use garages on municipal plots 278 and 388. The justification: construction projects and commercial use have caused a critical shortage of parking spaces, leading to safety issues such as burglaries and thefts. The applicant will cover planning, construction, and maintenance costs as well as a monthly rent. The goal is to reduce public parking pressure and contribute to crime prevention at the same time.
This measure reflects the ongoing pressure on municipal parking resources. At the same time, it shows how mobility issues are closely linked to security policy.
Bicycle Infrastructure: Expansion at GGS Brüder-Grimm-Schule
Another focus was on school safety and the promotion of environmentally friendly mobility. The motion for additional bicycle and scooter parking facilities at GGS Brüder-Grimm-Schule was approved. Currently, there are about 20 parking spaces for scooters and 12 for bicycles, but demand is significantly higher. Children often park at construction fences or the outer school fences, which poses safety risks.
The expansion is intended not only to increase safety but also to improve order and promote the use of environmentally friendly modes of transport. Funding sources include the budget of District Committee 2 and possibly external funding programs.
School Safety: Rebuilding a Gate
Additionally, a motion was submitted for the reconstruction of a gate at the schoolyard entrance to Albertstraße at GGS Brüder-Grimm-Schule. The background is the planned rerouting of bus lines near the schoolyard exit, which will lead to increased traffic. The existing gate is slightly sloped, making it easy for children to quickly leave the schoolyard – a safety risk.
Funding for the physical barrier is planned from the budgets of District Committee 2, the Real Estate Service, and possibly funding programs. A temporary solution is planned for the construction phase.
Road Construction and Infrastructure: Investments in the Millions
In the 2026/2027 budget, extensive investment measures in road construction and infrastructure are planned. For example, District Committee 2 has allocated 100,000 EUR for street lighting alone in 2026. Other projects such as the renewal of roads, the development of the Grabfelder area, and the renovation of parks in the Horbachtal show that Mülheim intends to make significant investments in infrastructure over the next few years.
In addition to general road and bridge construction measures, special projects such as the new construction of a sports hall on Südstraße or the complete renovation of indoor swimming pools are planned. Total expenditures for construction projects in 2026/2027 are expected to exceed 67 million euros.
Outlook: Mobility as a Long-Term Challenge
The January planning shows that mobility in Mülheim is not only a short-term topic but is embedded in long-term investments. The combination of parking supply, bicycle infrastructure, school safety, and road construction reflects the complexity of the challenges.
Although individual projects were highlighted in January 2026, it is clear that mobility will remain a central topic in Mülheim in the coming years – especially with regard to sustainability, safety, and infrastructure development.
