Urban Development in Lohmar in March 2026: Focus on Traffic Planning and Infrastructure
In March 2026, Lohmar focused on key decisions in urban development and infrastructure. With the creation of a turning area for KiTa Waldgeister, the renovation of the small sports field at the Gesamtschule, and the planning of new traffic routes, the city is pursuing sustainable and traffic-safe solutions.
Traffic Planning and Kindergarten Access: Turning Area for KiTa Waldgeister
In March 2026, a concrete proposal was discussed for the creation of a turning area for KiTa Waldgeister in the special area of Reiterhof. The current access road has a road width of only about 6 meters in the rear section, making it difficult for parents to safely turn their cars. The coalition of CDU and SPD requested that the administration investigate whether an additional turning area can be implemented. The goal is to avoid maneuvering in the immediate vicinity of the kindergarten and to increase traffic safety. The proposal was referred to the Urban Development Committee for final planning discussions. However, funding is currently not available in the budget, and the measure is not eligible for subsidies, which complicates implementation.
Renovation of the Small Sports Field: Urgent Need for Movement in School Life
Another focus was the renovation of the small sports field at Lohmar Comprehensive School. The existing sports field consists of outdated artificial turf surfaces, which have been assessed as not traffic-safe since 2020. The renovation is therefore urgently necessary to ensure students' need for physical activity in full-day operations. The planned measures include the renewal of the surface, base layer, and drainage, as well as the replacement of sports equipment. The costs are estimated at approximately 570,000 euros. Since the full amount is not available in the budget, it is being examined whether funds from the federal special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality can be used.
Traffic Routes and Infrastructure: Renovation of Hauptstraße and Mühlenweg
In March 2026, several projects for the renovation of traffic areas were also in focus. The administration was tasked with preparing a draft plan for the pedestrian and cycling path between Mühlenweg and the school complex, as well as the cycling connection between Jabachradweg, Hauptstraße, and Mühlenweg. The aim is to increase traffic safety and user-friendliness for pedestrians and cyclists. The costs for this expansion section are planned at approximately 1.06 million euros. In addition, the extension of street lighting along the K 13 with solar-powered lights was approved to improve traffic safety at night. The measure is also eligible for funding and has already been included in the budget plan.
Wastewater Disposal Concept and Environmental Aspects: Planning for the Future
The Committee for Building and Infrastructure also recommended adopting the third revision of the Wastewater Disposal Concept (ABK) 2026–2030. The ABK documents the current state and future renovation needs of the drainage systems. It serves as a basis for planning and legal coordination with the water authority. Although the implementation of the concept has negative effects on the water balance and microclimate, it is considered necessary for the long-term safety of the city.
Conclusion: Sustainability and Safety as Central Themes
March 2026 in Lohmar was characterized by a strong focus on urban development and infrastructure. The city is pursuing sustainable planning that takes into account both traffic safety and the movement needs of the population. At the same time, it becomes clear that the financing and implementation of such measures remain challenging. While the participation of children and young people in decision-making processes has taken place in some cases, it is lacking in others. The future viability of the city therefore depends heavily on how well these projects can be integrated into the budget planning and funding programs.
