Gelsenkirchen 2026: Urban Development in Focus – Sewer Rehabilitation, Traffic Safety, and Climate Protection
In February 2026, Gelsenkirchen focused on extensive measures in the field of urban development and construction. With an investment volume of 19.6 million euros, the Gelsenkirchen Water and Sewer Company mbH is implementing sewer rehabilitation, ecological improvements, and synergies with traffic projects. At the same time, controversial construction measures and planning changes – from railway crossings to zoning plans – are shaping the city’s development.
Gelsenkirchen 2026: Urban Development in Transition – Sewers, Traffic, and Climate Protection
In the second half of February 2026, Gelsenkirchen carried out a series of key decisions in urban development. The Gelsenkirchen Water and Sewer Company mbH presented a comprehensive construction program with an investment volume of 19.6 million euros, covering more than 30 measures. In parallel, significant planning changes and construction projects in traffic and zoning were approved. The focus was on infrastructure, climate protection, and ensuring sustainable growth.
Sewer Rehabilitation and Ecological Modernization: The Focus of the Water and Sewer Company
On February 18, 2026, during the meeting of the GELSENKANAL Operations Committee, the Gelsenkirchen Water and Sewer Company mbH presented its 2026 construction program. With a total of 30 measures and a budget of 19.6 million euros, the city is pursuing a comprehensive rehabilitation of the sewer network. Particularly noteworthy is the combination of sewer construction with traffic projects, enabling synergies – as seen in the Fritz-Reuter-Straße and Pannhütte, where the Department of Traffic is responsible for asphalt selection.
Another highlight is the reconstruction of the Emscher system, which not only improves wastewater disposal but also creates ecological benefits. Gelsenkirchen will follow a similar approach for the Sellmannsbach and Kinnbach, where ecological improvements are planned until 2027. These measures are part of the long-term wastewater and stormwater management concept (ABK/NBK) and demonstrate that Gelsenkirchen is not only focusing on functionality, but also on sustainability.
Traffic Safety and Infrastructure: Railway Crossings and Bicycle Paths
Another central topic was the safety at railway crossings. In November 2025, a comprehensive traffic inspection took place, reviewing 11 railway crossings. Measures were planned that are set to be implemented by 2027. These include the renovation of sidewalks and road surfaces on Bülsestraße, as well as the reconstruction of Horster Straße to enable dual-track tram operation. Additionally, visibility at railway crossings is being improved to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
In the area of bicycle infrastructure, Gelsenkirchen is focusing on better visibility and advertising. A city-wide advertising campaign, including explanatory videos and merchandise, aims to increase the use of bicycle parking facilities. Particularly noteworthy is the facility at the central bus station (ZOB) in Buer, which is cleaned every 14 days and will receive additional signage.
Construction Planning and Zoning Changes: New Zeche Westerholt and Cranger Straße
In terms of urban planning, the zoning change "New Zeche Westerholt, southwestern section" came into the spotlight. The change, approved in July 2025, affects approximately 34 hectares at the city border with Herten. The goal is to adapt the terrain level and planning streets to technical changes, such as underground line laying. The rehabilitation measures are carried out by RAG AG, and 13 buildings of Zeche Westerholt, which are under heritage protection, are to be reused.
Another project is the construction work on Cranger Straße, which started in April 2022. With total costs of 8.8 million euros and a completion expected by the end of 2026, the rehabilitation is a long-term project. Originally planned for 2025, the project was delayed due to unplanned line work and a revised sewer route plan. Nevertheless, the focus remains on sustainable and legally secure development.
Climate Protection and Future-Oriented Planning
Gelsenkirchen has explicitly committed to climate protection. The Council has declared a climate emergency, and in the zoning change, it is emphasized that no significant climate relevance is expected. The aim is to align urban development with climate goals. This is also reflected in the investments in ecologically improved sewer systems and the promotion of bicycle infrastructure.
Outlook: Gelsenkirchen in Transition
The decisions of February 2026 show that Gelsenkirchen is pursuing a clear course in urban development: infrastructure, sustainability, and safety are in the foreground. With investments in the sewer network, modernization of traffic facilities, and securing railway crossings, the city is aiming for future-proof development. At the same time, it remains sensitive to the needs of its citizens through transparent planning and comprehensive participation.
