Gelsenkirchen's Mobility Transformation: From School Traffic to the IGA 2027

In April 2026, Gelsenkirchen focused intensively on traffic policy topics – from the parent taxi service to the major construction projects for the IGA 2027. This blog analyzes the most important developments and background information.

Mobility in Gelsenkirchen: A City Transformation in April 2026

Mobility development in Gelsenkirchen came into the spotlight during the week of April 2026. In the Committee for Transport and Mobility Development, not only were concrete improvements in school traffic discussed, but also preparations for the IGA 2027 and measures to promote cycling and pedestrian traffic were advanced. The city is moving towards a long-term mobility transformation – with clear priorities and financial constraints.

From School Traffic to the IGA: The Challenges of the Parent Taxi Service

One of the most urgent topics in April was the parent taxi service, which leads to chaotic traffic conditions outside schools. The CDU submitted a motion for the establishment of "Kiss & Ride" zones, while the Greens demanded a progress report on transportation to and from primary schools.

Since 2024, the administration has been evaluating the creation of "school streets" – a measure intended to ease traffic flow and increase safety. Concrete measures such as pick-up/drop-off zones and toolkits for parents are under discussion. At the same time, accident statistics are being reviewed to assess risks.

With 43 affected school locations, the issue is not isolated but structurally deeply rooted. The discussion shows how sensitive the balance between parental rights, traffic safety, and urban planning can be.

Cycling and Pedestrian Traffic: The Master Plan and AGFS Application

The Mobility Master Plan 2026/2027 is another central project shaping traffic policy in Gelsenkirchen. The revision is based, among other things, on the "Future Program for Cycling 2025." In this context, the "Pedestrian Traffic Check" was also introduced, which has not yet been thoroughly discussed by the political bodies.

Another highlight was the application for the AGFS infrastructure project "Protected Bike Lane" on Hiberniastraße. With a budget of around 2.25 million euros, this project is part of the larger strategy to strengthen cycling. At the same time, toolkits for service bikes and the expansion of the bike rental service (Metropolradruhr) are also planned.

The discussion about safety at signalized crossings underlines that the quality of infrastructure is crucial – not only for cyclists, but also for pedestrians.

Infrastructure Construction Sites: From Bridge Demolition to the IGA 2027

Major construction sites define the current mobility landscape. The bridge over the Rhine-Herne Canal on Uechtingstraße is being demolished – at a cost of 650,000 euros. The asbestos confirmation led to a need for changes in the demolition concept, showing how sensitive such projects must be to reality.

Also in focus: The intersection of Grothusstraße/Wallstraße, which will be redesigned as part of the IGA 2027. Here, the "Amphitheater" stop is being created as a barrier-free event stop with cycle paths. The total costs amount to 480,000 euros, funded from own resources.

The street construction programs in Gelsenkirchen-Nord and the renovation of the Emil-Zimmermann-Allee show that the city is relying on long-term planning. The renovations are scheduled until 2030 – a sign of stability, but also of the need for long-term financial planning.

Funding: Own Resources and Credit Risks

Funding for the measures is a crucial point. The city is increasingly relying on own resources, which is not without problems in the current economic situation. The 15th amendment to the infrastructure contribution regulation, which increases the costs for drainage facilities, also shows that the administration is active in the revenue side.

However, investments in the future – such as the bridge or the IGA 2027 preparations – are not without risk. The credit costs for road construction measures from 2025 to 2030 and the expenses for traffic facilities (over 30 million euros) show that Gelsenkirchen is dependent on careful budget planning.

Outlook: Mobility as a Climate Protection Issue

Mobility development in Gelsenkirchen is not only a traffic issue – it is part of the city's climate protection strategy. By promoting walking and cycling and expanding public transport, the city is trying to reduce motorized individual transport (MIV). The IGA 2027 is an important symbolic project that is intended to illustrate the combination of sustainability, innovation, and urban development.

In April 2026, the course for the future was set. Whether the mobility transformation in Gelsenkirchen will succeed now depends on implementation, financial stability, and public acceptance.
