Duisburg's Sports Policy in April 2026: New Pools, Sports Halls and Challenges
In April 2026, Duisburg will face major sports policy decisions: the construction of indoor swimming pools, the modernization of sports facilities, and the management of violence incidents in sports. We analyze the background, financial constraints, and the impact on the city's society.
Duisburg's Sports Policy: Expansion, Investments and Social Responsibility
Sports in Duisburg is not just a leisure activity – it is a central component for social integration, health prevention, and cultural enthusiasm. In April 2026, several sports policy decisions will be made that will shape the future of the city's sports infrastructure. The DuisburgSport Operations Committee will meet to discuss new constructions, renovation measures, and new concepts for recreational spaces. In addition, challenges such as violence at sports events will be addressed.
Construction of Indoor Swimming Pools and Sports Halls
In April 2026, the construction of an indoor swimming pool in Duisburg-Mitte was unanimously approved. The project is part of a forward-looking indoor swimming pool infrastructure in the city center and is intended to promote school swimming and club sports through several pools – including a 25-meter pool for public swimming and a 33⅓-meter pool for school and club sports. The location at Mercatorstraße 173 was chosen to strengthen the social infrastructure and to create a central, easily accessible facility for all population groups.
In addition, the planning of a new dual-purpose sports hall at the Lise-Meitner Comprehensive School was approved. With an area of 22 x 45 meters, the sports hall will cover the school's missing sports room requirements and will be built barrier-free according to DIN 18040-1. The cost of the new construction is approximately 6.3 million euros. The Lise-Meitner Comprehensive School is one of the three sports schools in Duisburg and will therefore benefit from better equipment.
Support and Renovation of Sports Facilities
Duisburg is also investing in the renovation and modernization of existing sports facilities. In April 2026, several measures were applied for and approved, including:
- The construction of an artificial turf field on Rheinpreußenstraße
- The modernization of the sports facility Rönsbergshof
- The renovation of the artificial turf pitch at the sports facility Im Holtkamp
- The energy-efficient general renovation of the swimming pool at Revierpark Mattlerbusch
These projects are part of the federal program "Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities" (SKS), which provides a total of 333 million euros. Duisburg is using this funding to bring its sports facilities up to a modern level and to ensure their use for school sports, club sports, and leisure sports.
In addition, the construction of an ice sports hall is planned, with up to 40 million euros in funding. In contrast to the renovation of the existing hall (budgeted at over 20 million euros), the new construction will be operated CO₂-neutral and will double the ice areas. This is a major step for school and mass sports in Duisburg.
Challenges: Violence in Sports and Renovation Deficits
In addition to investments and new constructions, challenges are also in the spotlight. In February 2026, incidents of physical violence at football matches in Duisburg became known. The AfD faction asked the operations committee about the background and the implementation of the existing violence prevention concept. This includes sanctioning measures up to the withdrawal of municipal sports facilities. The city of Duisburg has already been working on a joint concept with the Lower Rhine Football Association and the City Sports Association since 2021, but implementation remains a challenge.
Another problem is the shooting range of the sports hall at Krefelder Straße, which has not been fully usable since November 2025 due to defects. The AfD faction asked about the planning for the restoration, but as of April 2026, there were no clear timeframes. The hall is important for championships, and the renovation must therefore be planned quickly.
Outlook: Sports as Part of Duisburg's Future Viability
Duisburg shows that sports is not just a leisure topic, but has a fixed place in city politics. With the construction of indoor swimming pools, the renovation of existing sports facilities, and the support of clubs, the city is investing in the future viability of its infrastructure. At the same time, it is clear that social and organizational challenges such as violence prevention and renovation deficits must not be underestimated.
In April 2026, it becomes clear: Sports in Duisburg is more than competition and training – it is a central factor for integration, health, and community.
