Duisburg April 2026: What Moved in City Hall

In April 2026, Duisburg focused on decisions in the areas of culture, infrastructure, sports, and social affairs. Here is a monthly review.

What was important this month

  • Cultural policy on track: The Cultural Committee advocated for greater transparency and strategic direction and plans celebrations for the Duisburger Filmwoche and doxs! film weeks.
  • Königstraße Hoist Bridge becomes more expensive: The renovation of the historic bridge is now estimated at a total of 10.7 million euros, including subsidies and cost contributions.
  • Student transport secured for the future: The Tender Committee approved framework agreements for the student special transport until 2028/29.
  • Olympic bid is a success: With 72.95 % yes votes, the citizens of Duisburg expressed support for the region's application for the 2036–2044 Olympic Games.
  • Climate protection at the municipal level: The Committee for Environment, Climate and Nature Conservation set a goal for climate-neutral heating by 2045.
  • New sports halls and pool plans: The DuisburgSport Operations Committee approved investments in new and renovated sports facilities as well as subsidies for international sporting events.

Cultural Policy: A Strong Voice for Culture in Duisburg

April 2026 proved to be a strategic month for the cultural scene in Duisburg. The Cultural Committee approved several unanimous decisions, including the appointment of members to key bodies such as the Art Commission and the Cultural Advisory Board. Particularly noteworthy is the planning of the anniversary program for the 25th doxs! film week, which will take place with support from the North Rhine-Westphalia state budget.

In addition, Mayor Klabuhn proposed stronger communication with cultural institutions to showcase Duisburg’s cultural strength externally. The committee also critically addressed the low weighting of culture in the city budget, calling for stronger financial and strategic support.

Infrastructure: Hoist Bridge, Student Special Transport and Dike Renovation

The Königstraße Hoist Bridge remains a central project in Duisburg. After a cost increase from 5.236 million to 5.5 million euros, the renovation was unanimously approved. The total construction costs now amount to 10.7 million euros, including subsidies and the cost contribution of STEAG. The construction period is estimated at 24 months, with no plans for a pedestrian and cyclist protection tunnel due to financial constraints.

In the area of the student special transport, the Tender Committee approved framework agreements to secure student transportation for the school years 2026/27 to 2028/29. This project is a step toward a long-term stabilized mobility structure for students in Duisburg.

In addition to these projects, tenders were also awarded for the dike renovation in Mündelheim and for school relocations, with several negotiation procedures carried out.

Sports and Leisure: Investments in the Future

The DuisburgSport Operations Committee laid the foundation this month for several sporting investments. 700,000 euros from the federal program "Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities" were requested to advance projects such as the new artificial grass field in Rheinpreußenstraße and the modernization of the Rönsbergshof sports facility.

In addition, the council members approved 150,000 euros in event subsidies, including 40,000 euros for the Rhein-Ruhr Marathon, 40,000 euros for the World Rowing Under 23 Championship, and 21,000 euros for the ICF Canoe Polo World Championship. These investments show how important it is for Duisburg to support international sports.

The new indoor pool in Duisburg-Mitte and the planning of a dual-purpose sports hall at Lindenallee were also approved. The outdoor swimming season starts on May 2, 2026 and ends on September 5, 2026.

Social Affairs and Youth Welfare: Support for Disadvantaged Groups

In the Committee for Work, Social Affairs and Health, decisions were made that directly aim to support disadvantaged groups. The city of Duisburg extended funding for projects such as "Anlaufstelle Hamborn" and "Streetwork Innenstadt" until 2027 and also increased funding for a drug consumption room.

In addition, an awareness team was approved for the prevention of child welfare risks at major events such as the AOK School Marathon and the Rhein-Ruhr Marathon. This team consists of volunteer helpers and staff from the Youth Welfare Office.

In the Youth Welfare Committee, the plusKita Am Holderbusch model project was extended until 2030, and it was decided to merge the Special Fund for the Children and Youth Sector (SVK) with the Special Fund for Real Estate (SVI). This is a step toward better coordination and efficiency in the area of child and youth welfare.

Environment and Climate: Climate Neutrality as a Goal

The Committee for Environment, Climate and Nature Conservation set a clear course: climate neutrality in heating by 2045. The municipal heating plan includes 22 measures in six categories, including the redesign of the car park of the Glückauf-Halle in Hochheide and the renovation of the schoolyard in Kirchstraße.

In addition, Duisburg was confirmed as a "Fairtrade City" for another two years. This is a success for sustainable economic and consumer policy in the region.

Cross-topic: Urban Development and Citizen Participation

A central topic of the month was also citizen participation. The citizens' initiative on the region's bid for the 2036–2044 Olympic Games was a success with 72.95 % yes votes. This shows how strongly the citizens of Duisburg support major sports projects.

In addition, the Committee for Urban Development and Transport advocated for more green infrastructure. The ecological redesign of the car park of the Glückauf-Halle was approved, and development plans were continued that aim at higher quality of life and sustainability.

Conclusion and Outlook

April 2026 was a month in Duisburg in which many topics were set in motion: from the renovation of historic bridges to the future of cultural and sports facilities. The city is investing in infrastructure, social affairs and climate protection—and actively involving citizens in decisions.

In May, it will mainly be about the implementation of the approved projects. The hoist bridge, the new sports facilities and the development of the cultural program will come into focus in the coming weeks and months. For citizens, it remains exciting to see how these projects will be implemented in reality.
