Sports Policy in Bielefeld: From the Open-Air Hall to the New Primary School
In February 2026, Bielefeld focused on numerous sports policy topics – from the discussion on the open-air hall and new school sports halls to the establishment of a sports working group. An overview of the most important developments.
Political Debates on the Open-Air Hall
The open-air hall in Bielefeld, originally designed as a low-threshold access point to sports, was at the center of a heated debate in February 2026. The Green Council faction sharply criticized the booking fee of 15€ for 30 minutes during Prime Time (17–21 Uhr from Monday to Friday), arguing in a motion that it strongly compromised the inclusiveness of the facility. The faction called for the abolition of fees and a review of non-use to identify structural reasons for the low utilization. The administration, unofficially, announced a comprehensive usage analysis, which is expected to last until the summer of 2026.
Establishment of a New Sports Working Group
Another important event was the establishment of a sports working group by the City Council of Bielefeld. The group, consisting of 8 political representatives as well as representatives from the administration and supervisory board, includes a broad spectrum of political parties, including SPD, CDU, Alliance 90/The Greens, AfD, The Left, and FDP. The goal is to more effectively bundle topics such as sports promotion, sports development planning, and sports honors. The working group will be led by the chairman of the Committee on Education and Sports and can, if necessary, involve external experts such as the ISB or the Environmental Office.
In addition, advisory members were appointed, including representatives from the City Sports Association, the Evangelical and Catholic Churches, the City Parent Council, and the District Student Council. This structure enables broad participation and strengthens interest representation in sports policy.
New Sports Halls and School Construction Projects
In terms of infrastructure, there were two significant developments in February 2026. First, the approval of a grant from the sports allowance for the German Alpine Association Section Bielefeld e.V. was passed on an urgent basis. The grant of 201,714.64 € comes from state funds and was promptly disbursed at the urging of the Mayor and further committee members to advance the association's projects.
Second, the construction of the new Brothers Grimm Primary School in Sennestadt is well underway. The new building includes an integrated single-court sports hall with modern facilities such as barrier-free changing rooms, therapy rooms, and a green roof with photovoltaic modules. The school yard will be multifunctionally used and includes green learning areas, a school garden, and a green classroom. The sports hall is directly connected to the new school building and features spacious changing and sanitary facilities.
The new construction is part of a broader plan to modernize school locations in Bielefeld while simultaneously addressing sports and educational needs. A new playing field is also planned for the secondary school, which can be used until the autumn break of 2026.
Conclusion: Sports Policy in Transition
February 2026 was a month full of sports policy impulses in Bielefeld. From the debate on the open-air hall and the establishment of a working group to new school construction projects, it is evident that the city is actively advancing its sports infrastructure and promotion. The discussions on fees and inclusiveness, as well as the inclusion of young people and clubs in the decision-making processes, indicate a growing sensitivity for participatory and inclusive sports policy. What remains is the challenge of translating these political decisions into concrete improvements for all citizens of Bielefeld.
