Mobility in Bielefeld: Safety, Accessibility, and Planning in Focus

The city of Bielefeld has decided on numerous measures and projects in the area of traffic and mobility in May and June 2026. The goal is to increase road safety, improve the accessibility of kindergarten and school locations, and at the same time create sustainable and barrier-free infrastructure. In the districts of Schildesche, Brackwede, Dornberg, and others, both concrete traffic regulations and long-term planning were decided upon.

30 km/h Regulations and Traffic Calming

In several districts, Bielefeld implemented 30 km/h regulations as part of traffic calming efforts. Particularly in areas near schools, such as the Carl-Severing-Straße and the Marienfelder Straße, applications for speed reduction were submitted. These measures are part of the municipal school mobility concept and aim to make the school route safer for children. In addition, inspections were initiated to establish zebra crossings and pedestrian crossings at heavily used locations – for example, at the Luttertalbrücke.

In the Brackwede city center, the introduction of 30 km/h regulations was also discussed in order to calm traffic and promote pedestrian and cycling traffic. In the Carl-Severing-Straße, where there is already a parking problem, an application was submitted to remove additional signage in order to facilitate the exit from the Freibad Schröttinghausen parking lot.

Cycling and Bicycle Routes

In the area of cycling, several proposals and projects were put forward. For example, a bicycle route along the former B68 was examined in the working group "Verkehrskonzept Quelle." In addition, the width of the pedestrian/bike path in the Queller Straße was debated in order to make cycling in both directions safer.

Another focus was on the safety of cyclists. In several districts, inspections on cycle paths were initiated, particularly in front of schools where illegal parking is a problem. In the Bavostraße in Dornberg, speed-reducing elements were also constructed to improve the traffic situation.

Optimization of Public Transport and Parking Management

The optimization of public transport connections was another focus. In the Carl-Severing-Straße, a proposal to improve the bus line connection to Quelle station was discussed. In addition, there were requests for the improvement of the cycling connection at the Lönkert, especially in connection with the school.

Parking management was also on the agenda. The restricted parking ban on Campingstraße 20 was extended in order to ease the traffic situation in front of a parent drop-off point. In the Untere Hauptstraße, however, criticism was raised about the parking fee, which was described as a "job creation measure."

Safety and Infrastructure at Kindergartens

Another focus was on safety in the vicinity of kindergartens. At the Tieplatzschule kindergarten in Heepen, a traffic concept was developed that analyzed accessibility by bicycle, pedestrian paths, and public transport. A total of 23 measures were identified – including structural, organizational, and legal measures – to relieve traffic around the kindergarten and increase safety.

Road Construction and Renovation Projects

In the area of road construction, numerous projects were implemented or planned in 2026. Renovation work was started on several streets, including the Ludwig-Erhard-Allee, the Wörheider Weg, and the Bavostraße. Full closures were in place on the Herforder Straße and the Teutoburger Straße, while barrier-free construction was planned for the Windelsbleicher Straße.

Renaturation projects were also on the agenda, such as the renovation of the Beckendorfer Mühlenbach. The goal is to improve the ecological condition of the water body and restore ecological connectivity. The cost of the project is around 500,000 euros, with 80% of the funding provided by North Rhine-Westphalia.

The measures in the area of traffic and mobility in Bielefeld show a clear trend: the city is focusing on greater safety, better accessibility, and sustainable infrastructure. The approved projects and applications in May and June 2026 form the basis for a future-oriented mobility system in Bielefeld – with a clear focus on safety, barrier-free access, and sustainability.
