Weyhe Committed to Climate Protection: How the Municipality is Paving the Way to Climate Neutrality by 2035
In February 2026, the municipality of Weyhe made key decisions within the framework of its Climate Protection Action Plan 2035. This blog article shows how Weyhe is anchoring energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable mobility, and climate protection in the community through a holistic approach.
Weyhe as a Pioneer in Climate Protection: From Concept to Implementation
The municipality of Weyhe has set a clear goal: climate neutrality by 2035. This ambitious undertaking is no longer merely a political declaration, but is being realized through a wide range of concrete measures in the Climate Protection Action Plan 2035. In February 2026, key decisions were made that visibly mark the path toward climate neutrality in the areas of energy, mobility, education, and sustainability. Weyhe demonstrates how a small municipality, with strong commitment and strategic planning, can bring climate protection to life at the local level.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: The Core Strategy
Weyhe's energy policy is based on two pillars: energy-efficient renovation and the expansion of renewable energies. The focus is on reducing energy consumption by 30% and expanding wind and geothermal projects. The municipality supports energy-efficient new buildings at the KfW-55 level and uses thermography campaigns to help households identify heat losses.
Another milestone is the expansion of photovoltaics on 17 municipal buildings. By 2030, a total of 993 kWp is to be installed, with the goal of achieving a 60% self-consumption rate through storage. In addition, an energy monitoring system will be introduced in 2026 to improve the energy efficiency of municipal properties and increase transparency.
The municipality closely cooperates with regional energy advisory services and citizens' energy cooperatives to advance projects such as wind farms or large storage systems (BESS). Funding comes from KfW funding programs, municipal funds, and business tax revenues.
Rethinking Mobility: Cycling, E-Mobility, and Carsharing
In the area of mobility, Weyhe is committed to the sustainable development of infrastructure. The goal is to increase the share of cycling and reduce car kilometers. For this purpose, new barrier-free bicycle parking facilities are being built, safe crossings are being expanded, and 10–15 e-bike charging stations powered by green electricity are to be installed. In addition, a station-based bike-sharing system is being evaluated.
Another focus is the charging infrastructure for electric cars. Currently, there are already 62 charging points at 22 locations. The municipality wants to significantly increase this number and plans to integrate photovoltaics into the charging infrastructure. A carsharing pilot project is planned by 2028 to promote sustainability in individual transport.
Education and Citizen Participation: The Key to a Climate Protection Culture
The integration of climate protection into educational systems is a central component of the action plan. In the future, schools and kindergartens should be certified as "climate protection schools" and "climate protection kindergartens." This includes workshops, training sessions, and projects such as energy-saving detectives or school gardens. A digital network will also strengthen the exchange between institutions and parents.
Another highlight is the establishment of a central climate protection management unit, which will serve as a supporting institution for educational institutions, companies, and associations. The goal is to connect knowledge and initiate joint projects. In addition, an annual "Climate Forum Weyhe" is planned from 2027 onwards to strengthen the culture of participation and raise public awareness of climate protection.
Sustainability in Everyday Life: Repair Cafés, Flea Markets, and Rainwater Use
The municipality also promotes sustainability in everyday life. Repair and upcycling cafés are to be established in more districts to extend the lifespan of consumer goods. In addition, greater emphasis is placed on rainwater use. Pilot projects with cisterns and green roofs are to be implemented by 2026 to reduce drinking water consumption and the burden on the sewer system.
Flea markets and second-hand culture are also supported to strengthen the circular economy. The municipality provides spaces and permits and cooperates with associations and schools to create a regular event format.
Conclusion: Weyhe as a Model for Municipal Climate Protection
With its Climate Protection Action Plan 2035, Weyhe shows how a municipality can shape the transition to a climate-neutral future with clear goals, strategic measures, and broad citizen participation. By linking education, energy, mobility, and sustainability in everyday life, climate protection in Weyhe is not only political, but also socially anchored. The path to 2035 is long, but Weyhe has laid a strong foundation with the decisions of February 2026.
