Weyhe Monthly Blog: Climate Protection, Digitalization, and Inclusion in Focus

This month, Weyhe has taken significant steps toward climate protection, digitalization, and inclusion. The Climate Protection Action Plan 2035 was announced, fiber-optic expansion is well advanced, and the administration is accelerating digital transformation.

Climate Protection as a Central Pillar

What was important this month:

  • The Climate Protection Action Plan 2035 was adopted – a milestone on the path to climate neutrality.
  • 37 concrete measures are to be implemented in the areas of Energy, Mobility, and Resource Protection.
  • The municipality is receiving funding from federal sources and is planning a sustainability strategy with monitoring and communication.
  • The Citizen Budget is being introduced, allowing for greater citizen participation in investment decisions in the future.
  • Weyhe is part of Lower Saxony's AI Pilot Group and is relying on digital solutions for administrative tasks.

Climate Protection: From Strategy to Implementation

In March 2026, Weyhe adopted the Climate Protection Action Plan 2035, a concrete guideline for the next ten years. The plan is based on a 37-page list of measures, structured into five action areas: Energy, Mobility, the Community as a Role Model, Communication, and Resource Protection.

The municipality has drawn on comprehensive funding: 50% of the costs were covered by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Implementation is being monitored by a monitoring concept, and it is planned to actively involve the population in the process.

In 2026, measures such as the redevelopment of the transportation development plan and the modernization of citizen bus stops will be in the foreground. With a budget of 50,000 euros from the municipal climate protection funding program, pilot projects are being supported.

Digitalization and Fiber Optics: Weyhe on the Way to the Digital Age

Weyhe is accelerating the digital transformation in administration and infrastructure. The guidelines for the use of AI came into effect on 01.03.2026, and the municipality is part of Lower Saxony's AI Pilot Group.

In the area of infrastructure, the fiber-optic expansion has made progress: 90.2% of households have already been connected („homes passed“), of which 40% are actively used. For nearly 550 addresses in so-called "gray areas," no connection is currently possible – this is seen as a central task for the future.

In addition, the Citizen Budget will be introduced at the start of the next financial year. With a budget of 50,000 euros per year, citizen projects will be supported, which will be presented and discussed via a digital platform.

Inclusion as a Forward-Looking Goal

Inclusion will be given more focus in Weyhe in the future. The SPD faction has proposed developing Weyhe into a fully inclusive municipality. In this context, tools such as the "Inclusion Compass" on the municipal website and an Inclusion Strategy are to be developed, based on Lower Saxony's Inclusion Action Plan.

These measures are intended not only to break down barriers but also to promote the participation of all citizens in local life. The working group "Inclusion" serves as a central driver, composed by all factions – except Die PARTEI/DIE LINKE./FWG.

Overview and Outlook

The developments in Weyhe show that the municipality is actively engaged on multiple levels. Climate protection is a central pillar, being implemented with concrete measures and funding. At the same time, digitalization is being accelerated – both in the administration and in the infrastructure.

The introduction of the Citizen Budget is another milestone that strengthens citizen participation. And the discussions about inclusion show that Weyhe is also focusing on social progress.

Looking ahead, it can be expected that in the coming months the first measures from the climate protection plan will be implemented and the fiber-optic expansion will continue to progress.

Conclusion

Weyhe has shown itself this month to be a forward-looking and citizen-oriented municipality. With a clear focus on climate protection, digitalization, and inclusion, the municipality is setting impulses that can have an impact beyond the local context. The next months will show how these plans can be implemented in practice – and what new challenges will arise.
