Climate Protection in Weyhe 2026: Between the 2035 Target and Implementation in Daily Life

The municipality of Weyhe has set ambitious climate protection goals – climate neutrality by 2035. In March 2026, progress, challenges, and the concrete implementation were in focus. An in-depth look at the strategy, the measures, and the financial and social backgrounds.

Climate Protection in Weyhe: Between Target and Implementation

The municipality of Weyhe has set a high standard for itself with its goal of climate neutrality by 2035. In March 2026, the focus was on progress, planned measures, and the challenges ahead. The municipality is pursuing a comprehensive strategy encompassing energy, mobility, communication, resource conservation, and the role model function of the community.

Energy and Renewable Energy: The Key to Climate Neutrality

Weyhe has decided to largely meet its energy needs through renewable sources. The current status shows that the municipality has already installed 26 MW of photovoltaics. The roof area potential is around 192,000 MWh per year. In addition, Weyhe has three wind turbines (3.9 MW) in Sudweyhe, with a repowering project planned for two new turbines.

Another project is the use of geothermal energy. Near-surface geothermal energy can provide up to 905,500 MWh per year in Weyhe, and a deep geothermal project (>100 °C) has already been submitted. Biomass plays a supporting role, although land competition and emissions are considered disadvantages. Nevertheless, biogas is being used from manure, straw, and organic waste.

The municipality aims to cover 121% of its electricity demand with renewable energy by 2035. At the same time, the final energy demand will be reduced by 27%, significantly improving energy efficiency.

Mobility: Transport Transition as a Climate Protection Lever

The transport sector is a key factor for climate protection goals. Weyhe has identified motorized individual transport (MIV) as a problem and is focusing on more climate-friendly alternatives. The goal is to reduce MIV energy consumption to 4,300 MWh by 2035. This includes promoting cycling and walking, expanding e-bike infrastructure, and electrifying the municipal vehicle fleet.

A significant step is the planned extension of tram line 8 from Bremen via Stuhr to Weyhe. In addition, an e-bike charging station will be installed on the Weser-Radweg in Dreye. The community plans to install 31 charging stations at 22 locations and to conduct a joint tender with Stuhr for charging stations.

Implementing a multimodal mobility strategy – integrating public transport, cycling, and sharing options – is a central part of the climate protection planning. The municipality expects a shift of 2% of car usage, saving 200 tons of CO₂ equivalents annually.

Citizen Participation and Communication: The Key to Acceptance

The success of the climate protection concept depends heavily on the acceptance of the citizens. Weyhe has developed a communication strategy based on transparency and participation. This includes a climate protection website, social media, information stands at community events, and citizen forums. Feedback mechanisms such as surveys and online voting are intended to involve citizens.

A special role is played by climate education in kindergartens and schools. Projects such as school gardens, energy-saving detectives, and workshops on sustainable nutrition are part of the educational strategy. With the aim of strengthening climate awareness, Weyhe is also planning to introduce a "Climate School/Climate Kindergarten Weyhe" label.

The municipality has also planned a repair and upcycling café to promote the circular economy and supports flea markets to reduce consumption and waste.

Funding and Partnerships: The Framework for Implementation

The implementation of climate protection measures is financially ambitious. Weyhe is using funding programs such as the National Climate Initiative and is cooperating with partners from business, education, and media. The municipality has also joined the Climate Alliance and is participating in projects like "STADTRADELN".

Another project is the establishment of a Climate Protection Working Group, which is to serve as a forum for citizen participation and exchange. Funding comes from municipal funds, supplemented by grants and sponsorship.

Funding the measures is a decisive factor. The municipality plans to set up a comprehensive climate protection funding program by 2035, supporting investments in charging stations, energy consulting, and renovation measures.

Conclusion: On the Way to Climate Neutrality

Weyhe has set a high standard for itself with its goal of climate neutrality by 2035. The municipality is relying on a comprehensive strategy that includes energy, mobility, communication, resource conservation, and the role model function of the community. The implementation is ambitious but feasible – provided that citizens remain actively involved and funding remains secure. With the right measures and a continuous adjustment of the strategy, Weyhe can become a model for climate-conscious municipalities in Lower Saxony and beyond.
