Traffic and Infrastructure: School Routes and Streets in Focus

Child safety on school routes is a central topic in Oldenburg. The SPD faction requested specific measures to improve the traffic situation around the Hermann-Ehlers-School. These include the establishment of a school street in Feststraße and Straße Am Schießstand, as well as the redesign of Danziger Straße into a one-way street. These measures are to be implemented in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulation (StVO) and the Road Traffic Act (NStrG).

In the same context, the city council discussed the traffic concept for the planned stadium reconstruction at Maastrichter Straße. The VCD Oldenburg criticized shortcomings in the planning, particularly the lack of traffic data collection and incomplete modeling. Additionally, questions from residents were raised regarding parking markings on sidewalks and the spatial compatibility of the project.

Education: School Construction and School Districts

In March, several important decisions regarding education were made. The new construction of the three-court sports hall at Brandsweg was prioritized due to safety concerns. The current condition of the hall poses injury risks and could even lead to games in higher leagues being banned. The planned renovation works include new lighting, a new sports floor, roof waterproofing, and sanitation facilities.

In the School Committee, it was unanimously decided to run the Wechloy Primary School as a two-track full-day school starting in 2027/2028. At the same time, school districts of several primary schools were adjusted to reflect the city's population. Affected are among others the primary schools Bloherfelde, Haarentor, Wechloy, and Bümmerstede. The changes will take effect from the school year 2027/2028.

Culture and Integration: Award Ceremony and Sports

The Culture Committee awarded the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Award 2026 to Güner Yasemin Balcı. She is honored for her commitment to freedom, self-determination, and human rights. The award ceremony will take place in May 2026. The award is endowed with 10,000 euros, with an additional 30,000 euros allocated for the organization.

In the area of integration, the project "20. Afrika Cup Oldenburg 2026" was supported with 2,000 euros from municipal funds. The project is aimed at migrant organizations and primary school teams and deals with topics such as racism and inclusion. Further integration promotion projects were supported with a total of 240,000 euros.

Urban Planning: Land Use Plan and Relief Road

The land use plan N-777 G for the area Fliegerhorst/Hallensichel-Ost was a central topic in the Committee for Urban Planning and Construction. The plan is part of the master plan for industrial development and provides for the construction of a relief road that is intended to connect industrial areas with residential quarters. 10 route variants are being reviewed, with variants 3a/b/c and 5 being criticized by the district of Ammerland.

The planning takes into account the Building Code (BauGB), the Municipal Traffic Financing Act (GVFG), and the Environmental Compatibility Assessment (UVPG). The public participation process is planned in two steps. The relief road will be 60% funded by the state.

Summary and Outlook

March 2026 was marked in Oldenburg by topics that directly affect citizens' lives: safety on school routes, investments in education, cultural events, and the future of urban development. The city is investing in infrastructure and education, promoting cultural diversity, and working on better traffic planning. In April, the focus will be on implementing the approved measures – particularly in renovation projects and the implementation of school district adjustments.
