What was important this month
- City anniversary 2029 in preparation: A working group was established to plan the anniversary celebrations – with public participation and a foundational resolution passed by the Council.
- Cultural funding increased: Over 28,000 euros were allocated to cultural projects in Nordhorn, including theater education and exhibitions at the Gallery.
- Schools further developed: A new introductory level at the Montessori School, increased after-school care, and temporary class expansion at elementary schools.
- Partnerships in motion: Preparations for citizen meetings, visits by Ukrainian delegations, and a graffiti project on the theme of city partnerships are well underway.
- Heating planning adopted: The municipal heating plan was approved as a strategic tool for the transformation of the heating supply.
Culture and Anniversary Planning: Nordhorn Looks Ahead
In March 2026, Nordhorn looked ahead – specifically toward the City Anniversary in 2029. The Cultural Committee established a working group to lead the preparations. A key component is citizen participation: suggestions and ideas will be collected and fed into a foundational resolution of the Council.
Culture in Nordhorn also continued to thrive. The Old Weaving Mill and the Gallery are planning several significant exhibitions, including the work of Isaac Chong Wai, winner of the Nordhorn Art Prize 2024. For culture enthusiasts, there were also concrete figures: 28,705.08 € were allocated as funding for 2026 – among other things for theater education and the project "In meinen Schuhen II."
Education and Schools: Expansion of Offerings
Important decisions were made in the School Committee in March that will have a lasting impact on the educational landscape in Nordhorn. Thus, the class expansion at the Pestalozzi Elementary School was temporarily approved to cover the increasing number of students. At the same time, an introductory level at the Montessori School is being established, which will accept children from the age of three.
In addition, the right to full-day care is being implemented. A participatory process is planned to start in April with workshops and continue until February 2027. The city also funds school social work until 2028 – currently, six school social workers are active at Nordhorn elementary schools.
Another focus: Extracurricular learning sites. With 50,000 euros, subsidies for bus trips are made possible, including a "Walking Bus" at the elementary school Am Roggenkamp, which offers parents and children a safe alternative to school.
Partnerships and International Encounters
Nordhorn's partnerships with Reichenbach, Montivilliers, and Malbork are in full swing. In March, the citizen meetings and visits were concretized: thus, a Ukrainian delegation is expected in June in Nordhorn, and the Partnership Association plans a citizen meeting in Reichenbach from April 30 to May 3 with about 40 participants.
A special project is the graffiti project on city partnerships, which will start in the summer holidays and be presented at a closing event in September 2026. In addition, a partnership association was founded under the chairmanship of Andreas Gebhardt, who will further strengthen the relationships.
Heating Planning and Industrial Development
In the Council meeting, the final report on municipal heating planning was approved – a strategic instrument for the long-term transformation of the heating supply. In addition, the pre-purchase ordinance for the area "East of Wietmarscher Street" was passed to enable a targeted industrial area development.
Overview and Outlook
March 2026 was a month of expansion and preparation in Nordhorn. The city is investing in culture, education, and international partnerships, while at the same time planning the energy future and industrial development. The focus on citizen participation, sustainability, and youth creativity shows that Nordhorn is not only shaping the present, but also thinking about the future.
With the City Anniversary in 2029 and the implementation of the heating plan, an exciting year lies ahead – and Nordhorn is actively preparing for it.
