Braunschweig focuses on youth participation and improved leisure offers

Youth Policy in Motion: Braunschweig Focuses on Inclusion, Leisure, and Future Visions

In recent years, Braunschweig has increasingly positioned itself as a dynamic place for children and young people. In February 2026, the city took another step toward a livable, youth-friendly urban development with several decisions and initiatives. The topics range from the introduction of a possible Children's Holiday Card to the renovation of youth centers and the strengthening of young people's participation in political processes. These measures reflect a broad engagement with the needs of the younger generation and show how the city wants to actively shape its future.

Children's Holiday Card: Evaluation of a Model from Other Cities

One of the biggest discussions revolved around a proposal from the Green parliamentary group to evaluate a Children's Holiday Card. The goal is to provide children and young people with a low-threshold access to leisure activities during school holidays, particularly to municipal swimming pools. The holiday card should consider age limits and possibly also include holders of the Braunschweig Pass.

The evaluation focuses on feasibility, components of the service, target groups, costs, financial implications, and possible pilot phases. Results are planned for May 2026. In other cities such as Berlin, Munich, or Bremen, holiday card models already exist that can serve as examples. Although Braunschweig already offers individual discounts and holiday programs, it does not yet have a uniform model. The evaluation aims to clarify whether a holiday card would be financially, organizationally, and socially meaningful.

Youth Center B 58 and Campsite Lenste: Investment in the Future

Another focus was the renovation and development of youth spaces. The Children's and Youth Center B 58 is in a condition that requires renovation. A total of 100,000 euros has been allocated for the preliminary planning in the 2025/2026 double budget. In 2026, the tendering of a feasibility study is planned, which will assess building opportunities on the site. Results are expected in autumn 2026.

In addition, the renovation plan for the Youth Campsite Lenste was presented. The plan includes basic renovations of sanitary facilities, modernization of electrical systems, dirty water pipes, and fire protection measures. The 2026 budget has allocated 100,000 euros for renovation measures up to 2029. These investments show that Braunschweig is thinking long-term about the needs of young people and creating spaces that are attractive and safe for them.

Youth Participation and Playground Renovation: Children as Co-Creators

In addition to infrastructure, the active participation of children and young people is a central issue. The Municipal District Council 221 (Weststadt) decided to involve children and young people more strongly in future planning. A speaking right in municipal district council meetings dealing with youth-related topics is planned. The results of the first Weststadt Children's and Youth Conference on 28.01.2026 will be presented in April 2026.

Another example is the playground Möhlkamp, which will be redesigned in May 2026. Children were actively involved in the planning process. The new facility offers three themed play areas, including a tower with a slide, a basketball court, and swings. The playground not only promotes physical activity but also social interaction and imagination. The costs of 400,000 euros will be financed two-thirds from urban development funds.

Conclusion: Braunschweig as a Pioneer for Youth-Friendly Cities

The developments in February 2026 show that Braunschweig is not only investing in infrastructure, but also in inclusion and future visions. With the evaluation of a Children's Holiday Card, the renovation of youth centers, and the strengthening of young people's participation, the city is actively working toward a youth-friendly future. These measures are not only symbolic, but also help to ensure Braunschweig as an attractive place to live for young people – today and tomorrow.
