Braunschweig: Rehabilitation of Main Utilities at Rüningen School – A Step Toward Better Infrastructure
In March 2026, Braunschweig took an important step toward modern infrastructure: The second construction phase of the rehabilitation of main utilities at Rüningen Primary and Secondary School was approved. This article outlines the background, costs, funding, and impact on the region.
Rehabilitation of Main Utilities at Rüningen Primary and Secondary School
In March 2026, the Committee for Planning and Construction of the City of Braunschweig approved the second construction phase of the rehabilitation of main utilities at Rüningen Primary and Secondary School. With a total budget of 2,085,000 euros, the project marks another milestone in Braunschweig's efforts to sustainably improve its urban infrastructure.
Background and Necessity of the Rehabilitation
Rüningen School, located at Thiedestr. 24A, is part of the city's educational landscape and is attended by numerous children and young people from the Rüningen district and surrounding areas. The existing main utilities—particularly the sewage main utilities for foul and stormwater—have lost efficiency in recent years, making the school increasingly unsafe and less efficient to operate.
The rehabilitation includes the renewal of sewage main utilities, the restoration of pipelines, manholes, and channels, as well as measures for stormwater retention. The latter will be implemented through gutters and a retention volume of approximately 295 m³, which will help the city manage heavy rainfall events—crucial in the context of climate change efforts.
Costs, Funding, and Construction Period
The costs for the second construction phase amount to a total of 2,085,000 euros. The funding is partly sourced from the 2025 budget and the Investment Program 2024–2029 (IP 2024–2029). Specifically, 700,000 euros for 2026 will be provided from the budget.
The construction work is planned for the period from July 2026 to August 2027. This sets a realistic timeframe that allows the rehabilitation to be completed in two construction phases without excessively burdening the school.
Decision-Making and Political Support
The decision for the rehabilitation was unanimously adopted on 10 March 2026 in the Committee for Planning and Construction. The voting results showed clear support: 8 votes in favor, no votes against, and no abstentions. The meeting took place at the City Hall in Room A 3.191 and lasted from 13:00 to 13:18.
The political approval is an important signal for the implementation of the project and underlines the priority Braunschweig assigns to educational development and infrastructure. Additionally, the approval ensures transparency and planning certainty for the affected citizens.
Outlook and Significance for Braunschweig
The rehabilitation of the main utilities is not only a technical project but also a symbolic step toward sustainable urban development. It contributes to improving the quality of life in Rüningen, making the school safer, and advancing climate protection through better stormwater management measures.
Moreover, the project demonstrates how central the collaboration between politics, administration, and the population is in urban development projects. Braunschweig has set another milestone on the path to becoming a modern, resilient, and livable city with this decision.
