Mobility Strategy in Bad Vilbel: Eastern Regional Tangent and Local Transport Improvements
In April 2026, Bad Vilbel actively advocated for the accelerated planning of the Eastern Regional Tangent (RTO). At the same time, smaller but important measures in local transportation were implemented. An overview of the decisions and their background.
Eastern Regional Tangent: Bad Vilbel Pushes for Faster Planning
In April 2026, Bad Vilbel clearly positioned itself in favor of the accelerated planning of the Eastern Regional Tangent (RTO). The FDP motion, passed in the city council, calls for concrete measures to drive forward the realization of the rail connection. The Eastern Regional Tangent is regarded as a central project for better connecting the Wetterau region to Frankfurt and could, in the long term, lead to significant relief for roads and greater climate protection.
Why is the RTO so important for Bad Vilbel?
The Eastern Regional Tangent is part of the regional railway infrastructure and aims to optimize the connection between Frankfurt and Gießen. For Bad Vilbel, this means a direct, fast connection to Frankfurt that could relieve commuters. Approximately 25,000 people commute daily between Bad Vilbel and Frankfurt, with 60% using cars, leading to significant traffic congestion. The estimated cost of traffic jams is around 15 million euros per year, taking into account time loss, fuel consumption, and emissions. A tangential rail connection could save up to 8,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
Concrete Measures for Planning Acceleration
The city council has tasked the municipal administration with preparing measures to accelerate the planning of the RTO. These include:
- The inclusion of the Niddatalbahn in the planning process.
- The addition of Bad Vilbel to a Fast-Track list of prioritized public transport projects in the state of Hesse.
- The preparation of a data package on land plots, ownership relations, and compensation areas to be passed on to the Wetterau district and RMV.
- The city's willingness to contribute up to 100,000 euros to the costs of preliminary planning, provided the district and RMV also provide funding.
The administration has also taken on the role of a coordinator: It will regularly report on discussions with RMV, the district, and the state, and invite RMV/Regional Association and Deutsche Bahn to report on the planning status and measures for acceleration.
Small Local Transport Improvements with Major Impact
In addition to the strategic focus on the Eastern Regional Tangent, there were also smaller but meaningful local transport measures. For example, two bus stops were renamed: The stop "Berliner Straße 2" was renamed to "Elisabethenhain" and the stop "Amtsgericht" to "Waldblick." These measures, confirmed by RMV on 20.02.2026, are part of the continuous adaptation of local transport to the needs of residents and contribute to better orientation in public transport.
Outlook: A Mobility Strategy in Transition
The decisions of April 2026 show that Bad Vilbel is consciously aligning itself with a forward-looking mobility strategy. With the Eastern Regional Tangent, the city is pursuing a long-term, sustainable solution for traffic that brings both economic and ecological benefits. At the same time, it shows sensitivity to the needs of residents in everyday life through small but precise changes in local transport.
The next steps will show how successfully the city maintains its dialogue with RMV, the Wetterau district, and the state of Hesse – and whether Bad Vilbel is actually included in the Fast-Track list. For the region, the Eastern Regional Tangent is more than just a project – it is a step toward a more mobile, climate-friendly future.
