Nuremberg Builds Forward – Focus on Fire Department, School Centers, and Stadium Renovation in February 2026

In February 2026, Nuremberg made several significant decisions in the field of urban development. The Building and Tender Committee as well as the Nuremberg Frankenstadion (FSN) Working Committee addressed renovations, new building projects, and planning issues. This Deep-Dive highlights the most important developments.

Renovations and New Buildings in Focus

In February 2026, several important construction projects were at the center of attention in Nuremberg. The Building and Tender Committee made decisions regarding fire station facilities, the renovation of historical buildings, and large educational projects. In addition, the stadium renovation was under discussion.

Fire Station Facilities: Renovations and Modernization

In the Building and Tender Committee, several renovation and new construction projects for fire station facilities were approved. The volunteer fire departments in Gartenstadt, Worzeldorf, and Kornburg received new or modernized buildings that meet today's requirements.

  • Gartenstadt: The new building cost a total of 6.22 million euros. The cost increase was 29%, mainly due to index adjustments and external factors such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In addition, gender separation in sanitary areas was implemented.

  • Worzeldorf: The total costs amounted to 3.48 million euros, with the supplementary object plan including 650,778 euros. The renovation also included the construction of a second emergency exit and the modernization of sanitary facilities.

  • Kornburg: Additional costs of 747,717 euros were incurred in this project. Along with the renovation and extension, barrier-free access was a central theme. The cost increases were covered by funds from various medium-term plan updates.

South-West School Center: A Major Project with Long-Term Implications

One of the largest construction projects in Nuremberg is the new building of the South-West School Center on Pommernstraße. The existing building, which no longer provided enough space after 45 years, will be replaced by a modern new construction. The new school center will provide space for 2,475 students.

The total costs of the project amounted to 219.76 million euros, with a cost increase of 15% compared to the project freeze. The second supplementary object plan was approved in February 2026 to secure against inflation and other additional costs. The funding is secured through the medium-term plan update for 2026, and there are no effects on the staffing plan or diversity aspects.

Renovation of the Marientorzwinger: Cost Increases Due to Unforeseen Challenges

The renovation of the northern Marientorzwinger and its surroundings was another central project. The total costs amounted to 4.15 million euros, which was 1.07 million euros above the original plan. The reasons for the additional costs were varied:

  • A cost increase of 20.9% due to the building price index (625,955 euros).
  • Unexpected expenses due to asbestos findings, missing foundations, and building law restrictions (445,790 euros).

The funds from urban development promotion were increased from 1.96 million to 2.81 million euros, and the city's share increased from 1.04 million to 1.35 million euros. The measure was already approved in October 2021 and is included in the budget under MIP No. 1031.

Nuremberg Frankenstadion: Identity in Renovation

The renovation of the Max-Morlock Stadium was the focus of discussion in the Nuremberg Frankenstadion Working Committee. The identity of the stadium is to be preserved through twelve identity-defining features. The octagonal basic shape and the historic facade are particularly important. The planning office asp Architekten GmbH was commissioned to carry out the preliminary planning. The identity documentation is to serve as a basis for future planning and decision-making processes.

Outlook

The decisions made in February 2026 show how strongly Nuremberg is oriented toward investments in infrastructure, education, and security. The increasing construction costs due to index adjustments and unforeseen challenges represent a constant burden. At the same time, it becomes clear that the city is ready to overcome these challenges through flexible financing and planning. The stadium renovation is also a further signal of the city's future viability and identity.
