Mobility in Nuremberg: March 2026 – Focus of the Transport Committee

In March 2026, Nuremberg's Transport Committee intensively addressed the future of mobility in the city. Cycling infrastructure, barrier-free accessibility, e-mobility, and the expansion of the rail network were in focus. An overview of the most important decisions and developments.

Mobility in Nuremberg: March 2026 – Focus of the Transport Committee

Mobility in Nuremberg is on the move. March 2026 brought numerous decisions and plans that redefine traffic flow, accessibility, and sustainability in the city. Central to these efforts were the expansion of the cycling network, the barrier-free design of traffic areas, and the development of rail and e-mobility.

Cycling: Network Expansion and Safety

A central topic in the Transport Committee was the 2026 Cycling Infrastructure and Construction Program. The goal is to close gaps in the cycling network and make the network safer and more comfortable. For example, measures for the Eichendorffstraße were approved, where the cycle lane between Stadenstraße and Mörikestraße will be continuous and barrier-free. In the Regensburger Straße, the existing sidewalk will be opened up for cycling to improve infrastructure for cyclists.

Comprehensive measures are also taking place in the Kreuzsteinstraße and the Nerzstraße: sidewalks will be widened, car parking spaces reduced, and new bike parking spaces created. These measures follow the goal of promoting cycling while simultaneously designing public space sustainably.

Barrier-Free and Safe Mobility

Another focus was on school route safety in areas such as the Pirckheimerstraße and the Spittlertorgraben. 30 km/h zones are to be introduced to increase safety for children on their way to school. Also approved was the barrier-free renovation of the Zerzabelshof Mitte bus stop in Waldluststraße. Here, the stop will be relocated to the roadside and equipped with a higher kerb to improve access for people with limited mobility.

A second entrance is also being built at the Hasenbuck underground station to meet fire safety regulations and improve access to the station. This is particularly important for the new district of Lichtenreuth.

Rail and E-Mobility: The Future of Mobility

The Transport Committee also approved the draft planning for the City-Suburban Railway (StUB) and a parallel Cycling Express Route (RSV) between Nuremberg and Erlangen. These measures are part of a comprehensive concept to improve the connection between the city and its surrounding areas. The planning approval will be submitted to the government of Middle Franconia in 2026.

Regarding e-mobility, it was decided not to renew the framework agreement with N-ERGIE for the installation of charging stations. Instead, competitive individual decisions will be made for sensible locations in public space. This reflects the shift in e-mobility, in which private providers are increasingly playing a role.

Outlook: Mobility in the Future of Nuremberg

The decisions of the Transport Committee in March 2026 show that Nuremberg is on the way to a sustainable, safe, and multimodal mobility system. The focus on cycling, barrier-free infrastructure, and the expansion of rail and e-mobility are steps toward a climate-friendly and low-traffic city. At the same time, the digital recording of cycling traffic is being further developed to make future planning even more precise.

With the 2025 mobility decision report and the 2026 cycling infrastructure construction program, the city has a clear goal: more people should choose environmentally friendly means of transport. The implementation of these plans will be crucial in the coming years for shaping mobility in Nuremberg.
