Fürth and the Future of Urban Development – Focus on February 2026

In February 2026, the city of Fürth set important accents in urban development through a variety of decisions made in the Committee for Construction and Works. From the modernization of infrastructure to the renovation of green and recreational areas – the decisions show how Fürth is preparing for the future.

Urban Development in Motion – Fürth is Focusing on Sustainability and Attractiveness

In February 2026, Fürth demonstrated itself as a city in motion, actively working toward a livable and sustainable future. The Committee for Construction and Works approved numerous decisions aimed at improving both the city's infrastructure and the quality of life for its residents. Key topics included urban planning, green space development, and traffic infrastructure.

Urban Planning and City Space Design: From Indoor Pools to Königstraße

A central point was the urban development plan 117 "Indoor Pool at Scherbsgraben." With a unanimous decision, the urban development contract and ordinance were passed to advance the construction of the outdated 1967 indoor pool. The municipal operator, infra fürth holding GmbH, will take over the planning. In addition, the city benefits financially with earnings of approximately 7,745 euros through the urban development contract.

Königstraße is also receiving a new impetus: With a pre-planning decision for the redesign of the intersection area of Königstraße – Friedrichstraße, the city has taken a step toward more attractive urban spaces. The goal is to create an urban open space with green areas that improves the city climate and makes everyday life more pleasant for residents.

Traffic Infrastructure and Cycling: Fürth is Investing in Future Mobility

In the field of traffic infrastructure, Fürth set clear priorities. The intersection Schwabacher Straße/Tucherstraße will be comprehensively modernized: the traffic light system FT 289 will be renewed, and new cycling facilities will be added. With costs of approximately 270,000 euros and the integration of barrier-free access – including ground indicators and acoustic guidance systems – the project is a milestone in climate protection and inclusivity.

Another step is the guidance concept for everyday cycling. Fürth plans a 95-kilometer route network and is applying for 100,000 euros in funding. Implementation is planned by 2028 – a clear message that Fürth is investing in its future as a city for cyclists.

Green Spaces, Climate, and Public Recreation: Fürth Remains Green

Fürth also set important impulses in the design and maintenance of green spaces. The children's playground in Friedensanlage will be completely renovated, with new play equipment and a beach volleyball court. Costs: 210,000 euros. In addition, new tree plantings in Südstadt are being examined – taking into account compatibility with bike streets – and tree plantings in Holzstraße will be implemented with 62,200 euros in funding.

Another highlight is the general renovation of the drainage system in the harbor area. With an investment of 17.5 million euros, a rainwater clarification and retention basin as well as a sewage pumping station will be built. The measure is a prerequisite for the development of the Rezatstraße industrial area and a milestone in the city's climate adaptation.

Culture and Leisure: Fürth is Investing in Public Space

The city is also investing in cultural and sporting offerings. The pétanque lanes in Südstadtpark will be renewed, and the ball fountain will be reinstalled in public space – depending on the location during the redesign of Löwenplatz. In addition, a third beach volleyball court will be built in Friedensanlage, significantly increasing the leisure value of the area.

Conclusion: Fürth as a City of the Future

February 2026 was a month in which Fürth demonstrated itself as a city of the future, showing that it is not only looking at the present but actively planning for a sustainable, livable, and attractive future. From the modernization of infrastructure to the creation of green spaces and the promotion of cycling and leisure activities – Fürth is pursuing a holistic urban development approach that is aligned with the needs of its residents.
