Fürth looks back: March 2026 in numbers, decisions and developments
In March 2026, the city of Fürth made important strides in economy, transport, administration and education. Here is the monthly review with the most important developments and decisions.
Fürth in March 2026: What was important this month
- Taxi fares increase: The taxi fare regulation was adjusted to offset rising costs for vehicle acquisition, insurance and maintenance.
- New local supply feasibility study: A feasibility study for local supply markets was decided for the districts of Vach and Mannhof.
- Financial and personnel development: Four new positions were created in the Market Office, and investments of 390,000 euros were approved.
- Road safety promoted: Speed checks, zebra crossings, and speed limits were decided to increase road traffic safety.
- Climate review omitted: In several decisions, the climate review was considered unnecessary.
Economic and urban development
This month, the city of Fürth took important steps toward a future-oriented economic structure. The Committee for Economy and Real Estate decided to conduct a feasibility study for local supply markets in the districts of Vach and Mannhof. The goal is to identify food retail locations that are both spatially and economically viable and align with the city's development goals.
In addition, the approval for the replacement construction of the EDEKA branch at Theodor-Heuss-Straße 1 was unanimously granted. The administration emphasized that no financial impact on the budget is expected. At the same time, it was decided to examine possible city influences on the former Möbelhaus-Flamme site, including purchase options and municipal planning instruments.
Transport and safety
In March 2026, it became clear that road safety remains a central issue. The Transport Committee decided on several measures to improve road safety, including:
- Speed checks along the Würzburger Straße and the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße.
- New zebra crossings at strategically important locations.
- Fixed speed camera poles at locations with high speed violations.
- Speed limit of 30 km/h in the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße to protect children in particular.
In addition, the implementation of a low-emission lane in the Schwabacher Straße between Benno-Strauß-Straße and Rothenburger Straße was initiated to strengthen public transport and cycling. The Greens also called for ecological and social criteria to be revived in municipal procurement, for example through CO2 compensation and wage binding.
Financial policy and administration
The Finance and Administration Committee laid the groundwork for a more efficient administrative structure this month. It decided on the creation of four full-time positions in the Market Office, including for assistance, security coordination and manual work. At the same time, 390,000 euros were released for investments, including for vehicle barriers and a truck with a forklift.
In addition, the meal prices at Fürth primary schools were increased. A school year with three meals will cost 75 euros in the future, which is an increase of 6 euros compared to the previous year. The administration emphasized that the increase is necessary to cover rising food and operating costs.
Overview: Structural and personnel adjustments
In the Committee for Personnel, Organization and Digitization, several organizational adjustments were decided. A team structure with four teams was introduced in the department I/SchvA, and the Hans-Böckler-School was restructured. In addition, Department V was renamed to "Planning, Construction, Green Spaces and Infrastructure" to clarify its responsibilities.
The Rules of Procedure Committee also decided to expand the Building Advisory Board by one member and to increase the city council ticket from 25 to 32 euros. These measures are intended to improve the transparency and efficiency of municipal bodies.
Cross-Topic: Climate and Sustainability
Although decisions were made in several committees that relate to climate protection (e.g., low-emission lane, CO2 compensation), in almost all cases no climate review was conducted, as no strong negative climate effects were expected. This shows that the topic of climate protection has not yet been integrated into all decision-making processes. At the same time, the discussion about ecological criteria in municipal procurement shows that sustainability is gaining renewed focus.
Conclusion and Outlook
March 2026 was marked in Fürth by clear decisions in economy, transport and administration. The city is setting impulses for more local supply, better road safety and a slimmer administration. At the same time, it becomes clear that climate protection and sustainability are being discussed, but have not yet been systematically integrated into all decision-making processes.
In April, the constitutive session of the City Council is scheduled, which will bring further personnel and structural adjustments. In addition, the results of the local supply study and the taxi fare adjustment will be noticeable for the citizens. Fürth is moving forward – and purposefully toward the future.
