Rhine-Neckar District: March 2026 – Focus on Youth Welfare, Education, and Transport

In March 2026, the Rhine-Neckar District set key impulses in the areas of youth welfare, education, and transport. Several committees made important decisions for the future of the region. Here is an overview.

March – Impulses for Education, Youth, and Mobility

What was important this month

  • The Youth Welfare Committee approved funding of over 6.8 million euros for social projects in the youth sector.
  • The Albert-Schweitzer-School Sinsheim received funding for digital innovations and a school garden.
  • The Regiobus lines 750 and 798 will operate on a half-hourly frequency during peak times from December 2026.
  • The Job Center Rhine-Neckar District reported a decrease in basic living expenses and a positive development in integration efforts.
  • New BNE schools (Education for Sustainable Development) were added to the district.
  • The Albert-Schweitzer-School launched a project for the training of international caregivers.

Youth Welfare: Investment in the Future

In March 2026, the Youth Welfare Committee approved comprehensive funding for social projects in the youth sector. A total of 6.8 million euros will support school social work, parenting advice, and child day care. Particularly notable is the school social work, which will receive 2.55 million euros – a clear signal of the importance of psychosocial support in schools.

In addition, the committee advocated for the establishment of a legal advisory office in accordance with the Consultation Assistance Act. This is a step toward better legal advice for young people in conflict situations. Furthermore, cooperation with BIOS-BW in the area of sexual offenses has been expanded, strengthening the safety and rights of children and young people.

Education in Motion: Innovation, Sustainability, and Internationalization

The Albert-Schweitzer-School Sinsheim received a grant of 10,460 euros in March 2025 for the innovation program "Digital School." In addition to a ComThink set and a school garden, regional foundations such as the Sparkasse Kraichgau Foundation and BASF are also supporting this initiative. The school will serve as a model project for digital education until the end of 2026/27.

In the area of BNE (Education for Sustainable Development), two new schools have been added: the Carl-Theodor-School Schwetzingen and the Johann-Philipp-Bronner-School Wiesloch. The plaque presentation will take place in 2026. In addition, the Theodor-Frey-School Eberbach has been accredited for the Erasmus+ program – another step toward international orientation.

A special project is "Care & Stay!", which is funded by the Heidehof Foundation and will run until 2027. At the Albert-Schweitzer-School Sinsheim, 10 international trainees started in August 2025. The goal is to train up to 15 international caregivers annually – a pioneering approach to training support.

Transport: More Frequency, More Safety

The Committee for Environment, Transport, and Economy decided to expand the half-hourly service for Regiobus lines 750 (Schwetzingen – Walldorf – Wiesloch) and 798 (Speyer – Hockenheim – Walldorf – Wiesloch) from December 2026. This is a crucial step for commuters in improving mobility in rural areas.

The funding for this measure is secured through fixed amount subsidies. The Rhine-Neckar District will cover its share, provided that ZSPNV Süd covers the deficits and the state of Baden-Württemberg subsidizes the lines. The costs for the frequency increase in 2027 amount to 295,000 euros for line 750 and 411,000 euros for line 798.

In addition, the committee approved the implementation of construction measures in the safety and pavement program with a total volume of 930,000 euros. The projects affect the roads K 4156, K 4183, and K 4279 and are part of the long-term maintenance of district roads.

Social Development: Integration and Support

The Social Committee noted the achievement level 2025 and approved the goal agreement 2026 between the District Administration and the Job Center. Basic living expenses decreased by 3.4 percent to 94.4 million euros, indicating a stable social development.

In 2025, 85.5 percent of school leavers received advice – significantly above the target of 80 percent. The integration of single parents also improved. Overall, the number of unemployed people increased slightly, while the unemployment rate remained at 2.4 percent.

Outlook

March 2026 was marked by clear decisions in the areas of youth welfare, education, and mobility. The investments in digital school development, international training, and improved transport infrastructure show that the Rhine-Neckar District is looking to the future. In the coming months, it will be particularly interesting to observe the effects of the approved projects – especially since some initiatives will only start in full in the coming years.
