Leonberg Invests in Padel: New Sports Infrastructure for the Future
In February 2026, Leonberg’s City Council took decisive steps to promote the sport of Padel. The SV Leonberg/Eltingen e. V. will receive a grant for the construction of two Padel courts. This article outlines the background, funding, and impacts of the project.
A New Sport in Leonberg: Padel as a Future Sport
In line with the growing popularity of Padel – a hybrid of tennis and squash – Leonberg has made important decisions in recent weeks. The city’s largest sports club, SV Leonberg/Eltingen e. V., with over 5,000 members, plans to build two Padel courts in the LEWA Sports Park. This initiative is not only a step toward modern sports infrastructure but also an indicator of Leonberg's strategic positioning as a city of sport.
Funding and Support: How is the Project Realized?
The construction of the Padel courts is financially secured on multiple levels. The city of Leonberg supports the project with 40 percent of the eligible total amount, corresponding to a grant of 111,401 euros. Additional funding comes from the Württemberg State Sports Association (14 percent) and the club itself (33 percent). Moreover, marketing revenues are planned to further expand the financial flexibility.
The total costs, including a contingency, are estimated at 278,502.19 euros. Not included are costs for the building permit and electrical connection, which will only be known after the construction planning is complete. After approval by the City Council, a building application will be submitted, and the grant funds can be distributed starting in 2027.
Padel – A Sport with a Future
Padel is a modern racket sport that originated in Mexico and has since gained increasing significance in Germany. It is predominantly played in doubles and is particularly suitable for a wide age range. With around 350,000 active players in Germany, Padel is on the rise – and Leonberg wants to actively join this trend.
The plan includes two courts on an area measuring 48 meters long and 14 meters wide. The courts will be enclosed by glass walls and metal grids and equipped with LED lighting. They will be spatially separated from the football activities and have a separate entrance, allowing them to be used by non-club members as well.
Impacts on the Club, City, and Sports Offerings
The project has far-reaching effects. A membership increase of around 100 people is expected, which will strengthen the club and generate additional annual membership income of 20,000 euros. At the same time, the local sports offering is being expanded, increasing Leonberg’s attractiveness as a city of sport.
In addition, Padel promotes social interaction and offers an alternative to traditional ball sports. With the construction of the courts, Leonberg not only fulfills its role as a sports promoter but also as an innovation hub for modern forms of movement.
Conclusion: Leonberg as a Pioneer in Padel Sports
The construction of the Padel courts is a milestone in Leonberg’s sports policy. It shows how the city can work with its clubs to promote modern sports and reach new population groups. With this project, Leonberg not only strengthens its sports infrastructure but also enhances community spirit and the city’s appeal as a place to live.
