Jena in Focus: Mobility Policy in February 2026

In February 2026, several important decisions and discussions concerning mobility were at the forefront in Jena. From the renovation of the Paradiesbrücke to the revision of the Ziegenhainer Straße – this blog provides an overview of the developments.

Mobility in Jena: Decisions and Debates in February 2026

Mobility is a central topic in Jena, addressing both urban and climatic challenges. In February 2026, several meetings took place focusing on cycling, pedestrian traffic, and public transport. Particularly the discussions surrounding the Paradiesbrücke, the Ziegenhainer Straße, and winter road maintenance show how actively the city is engaged in this area.

Cycling in Focus: Budget, Plans, and Infrastructure

The cycling working group met on February 10 to discuss several topics. Central to the meeting was the breakdown of Jena's cycling budget from 2018 to 2025, as well as the progress of the 2035+ cycling plan. The administration reported on the use of funds and presented an updated list of measures.

Another key point was the so-called "disappearing" cycling infrastructure in the Wiesenstraße. The discussion highlighted that Jena still has deficiencies in maintaining existing bike paths. Additionally, results from the trial of the roundabout in the Wiesenstraße were presented, which could serve as a model for future roundabout designs.

Mobility and Climate Protection: The Ziegenhainer Straße and the Solar District

The Mobility Advisory Board met on February 17, with the revision of the Ziegenhainer Straße planning and the access to the Solar District at the center. The Ziegenhainer Straße is a central traffic junction, and the revision aims to optimize traffic flow while strengthening climate protection – for example, by increasing green spaces and improving cycle paths.

The discussion on access to the Solar District, on the other hand, concerned the expansion of infrastructure in an energy-efficient district. Here, not only traffic planning, but also integration into local public transport were in the foreground. The advisory board advocated for an accessible and ecological solution that also takes into account pedestrians and cyclists.

Pedestrian Traffic and Winter Road Maintenance: Challenges in the City

The pedestrian working group met on February 25 to discuss the start of the development of a measures concept to improve pedestrian traffic. A particular focus was on pedestrian counting, which is intended to serve as a basis for future measures. In addition, winter road maintenance was discussed, which plays a special role in Jena during the cold season.

In a separate report, it was noted that bottlenecks occurred in the Ammerbacher Straße and surrounding areas due to winter damage and parking problems in the Waldstraße. Particularly the passage width for waste disposal vehicles turned out to be a problem – a challenge that is also being discussed in public.

Outlook: Mobility as a Key Issue for Jena

The February debates in Jena show that mobility is not only a traffic issue, but also a central aspect of urban development, climate protection, and social integration. With projects such as the Paradiesbrücke, the Ziegenhainer Straße, or the Solar District, Jena is pursuing sustainable solutions that address both urban and ecological challenges.

It will be interesting to observe in March 2026 whether the discussions lead to concrete measures – and how Jena's mobility strategy can be implemented in practice.
