Erfurt is Investing in Climate-Friendly Mobility: Local Transport Plan 2026–2030 Approved
The local transport plan for Erfurt for the period 2026–2030 has been approved and confirmed. The goal is to make public transport barrier-free, climate-friendly, and digital.
Mobility in Erfurt: A Step Toward Climate Protection and Accessibility
The city of Erfurt, capital of the state of Thuringia, approved the local transport plan for the period 2026–2030 in April 2026. This plan marks a milestone in the development of public transport in the city. With a focus on climate protection, accessibility, and digitization, Erfurt is pursuing a modern, sustainable mobility strategy that meets both the demands of the future and the needs of today's population.
Local Transport Plan 2026–2030: The Framework for Modern Mobility
The local transport plan is not just a schedule, but a comprehensive strategy that coordinates the development of public transport over a five-year period. Central to the plan is the assurance of a service level of 7.375 million scheduled kilometers per year, to be delivered by the Erfurter Verkehrsgesellschaft (EVAG).
The planning process considers not only the current transport structure, but also future urban developments, population distribution, and traffic intersections. A particular focus is placed on integrating local transport into the Mittelthüringen Transport Association (VMT) and collaborating with neighboring districts. The plan was developed by an external expert (Mathias Schmechtig NahverkehrsConsult), ensuring transparency and independence.
Accessibility: A Central Milestone
A key element of the local transport plan is the complete barrier-free access to public transport. Currently, approximately 168 bus stops and three tram stations are not accessible for people with mobility impairments, making access difficult for them. The expansion of these stops is planned over a period of 15 to 20 years due to financial and structural challenges.
The city has committed to making at least three stops accessible each year. Exceptions are allowed for stops with low usage (fewer than 25 passengers per day), provided that the use of manually operated folding ramps is guaranteed. In addition, all new stops must be fully accessible from the outset.
Electrification and Digitalization: The Way to the Future
Electrification of the bus fleet is another key focus area. With the goal of using clean propulsion technologies for 65% of newly procured city buses by 2030 (50% of which will be emission-free), Erfurt is pursuing an environmentally friendly future. The use of alternative fuels, such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils), is already being implemented in practice to reduce emissions.
In addition, the digitization of public transport is being expanded. All EVAG vehicles are now equipped with onboard computer technology and interior screens. Stops with at least 300 passengers boarding per day will be equipped with dynamic visual and acoustic passenger information (DFI). The ITCS system (Intermodal Transport Control System) enables real-time passenger information, disturbance management, and coordinated priority for public transport vehicles at traffic lights.
Transport Association and Infrastructure: Integration and Expansion
Integration into the Mittelthüringen Transport Association (VMT) is a crucial component of the strategy. Erfurt has been a member of the VMT since 2006 and uses the uniform zonal fare system, which also applies to regional bus lines. VMT fare zone 10 covers the entire city area, and Erfurt annually contributes funds to cover losses from fare integration and harmonization.
In addition, infrastructure is continuously being expanded. Investments are being made in the development of transport facilities, stops, and workshops. The city is also planning the development of bus and rail interchanges in peripheral areas. Particular mention should be made of the expansion of tram line 9, which is seen as a project to increase the attractiveness of the public transport system.
Outlook: Mobility for All
The local transport plan 2026–2030 is not only an instrument to ensure mobility in Erfurt, but also a milestone on the way to a climate-friendly, accessible, and digital mobility system. The city has deliberately decided to not only expand, but also modernize and make public transport more inclusive.
The challenges are significant—particularly in terms of funding and technical requirements—but the political commitment and collaboration with partners such as the EVAG, the VMT, and the districts show that Erfurt is ready to actively shape the future of mobility.
