Transportation and Infrastructure – Focus on Safety and Modernization
In February, several traffic renovations were in the spotlight. The renovation of Mühlentorplatz to a signalized intersection (Variant 2) was unanimously approved. The costs are estimated at 3 million euros and are planned within the framework of the bridge renovation 2026–2027. The police also presented an accident statistics report with 188 registered accidents between 2017 and 2022, 92 of which involved personal injuries.
Additionally, the renewal of railway track 11 at Skandinavienkai station was approved, with an approval of 700,000 EUR in additional costs. The Schenkendorfstraße playground will be completely renovated, and the Grönauer Baum primary school will receive interim classroom spaces with a budget of 175,000 EUR.
Culture and Education – Investments in the Future
The Possehl Foundation supported Lübeck's cultural infrastructure with 399,200 EUR for the annual program of the LÜBECKER MUSEEN and 90,000 EUR for the improvement of the football pitch at Margaretha-Jenisch-Ring. In addition, a donation worth 296,000 EUR was accepted for the World Cultures Collection.
In educational matters, sports halls and renovation projects were in focus. The sports halls of inner-city schools require renovation, which is why the construction of a two-court sports hall at Falkenwiese is planned. In addition, an investment volume of 6 million EUR is planned for the sports facility at Neuhof in St. Lorenz Nord.
Social Affairs and Care – Demand is rising, measures follow
In the social affairs sector, it became clear that the demand for barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible housing is increasing. The Disability Advisory Council welcomed the housing market strategy but called for further concrete measures.
In addition, the Social Compass was published in the pilot phase, and the development of the online tool "SozNet" is in planning. At the nursing and elderly care home Heiligen-Geist-Hospital, the intake suspension was lifted, and the renovation planning is to be continued.
Energy and Climate Protection – Initiatives and Agencies
The Committee for Environment, Safety, and Order approved the establishment of a municipal energy agency, which is to present a concept by July 2025. The agency will, among other things, carry out climate protection campaigns, advise building owners, and support heat networks.
A pilot project for renaturation in the Niemarker Landgraben was launched, and a water management plan for the Wakenitz is in development. The AfD's request to suspend the Climate Protection Master Plan was rejected.
Outlook and Goals for March 2026
In March, the minutes of the February meetings will be approved in several committees. In addition, a reception for Lübeck residents turning 70 years old is planned, and the digitization of the housing benefit office will continue. In the area of education and sports, the construction of the Falkenwiese sports hall is a focus, and the preparation of feasibility studies for an adrenaline park project in Kücknitz is in planning.
To summarize, February was a month with clear decisions in the areas of infrastructure, culture, education, and social affairs. The city of Lübeck is setting impulses for safety, inclusion, and climate protection and is preparing for future challenges.
