Pirna: Focus on Urban Development and Construction Projects in February 2026

In February 2026, Pirna’s Urban Development Committee addressed several key construction projects. The focus was on the renovation of the Center for Education, Culture, and Social Affairs in Sonnenstein, the new construction of a gymnasium at the primary school in Neundorf, and the planning of construction site access routes. These decisions reflect the strategic orientation of urban development in Pirna.

Focus on Urban Development and Construction Projects in Pirna in February 2026

Urban development is a central element for Pirna’s future viability. In February 2026, several significant construction projects and planning steps were at the center of attention. The Urban Development Committee held a special session on February 3, 2026, and approved construction contracts that will significantly shape the city's educational and cultural infrastructure.

Renovation of the Center for Education, Culture, and Social Affairs in Sonnenstein

A central topic was the overall renovation and expansion of the Center for Education, Culture, and Social Affairs in Pirna-Sonnenstein (Varkausring 1b). The city of Pirna aims to strengthen infrastructure for education and social services and to make this location fit for the future.

As part of this project, two lots were awarded to external companies:

  • Lot 305 (Scaffolding): The contract was awarded to Bilfinger ISP Germany GmbH from Herne. The work is expected to last from April 13, 2026, to March 19, 2027, with a contract value of 5.538 million euros. Funding is largely provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
  • Lot 306 (Roofing and Sheet Metal Work): This part of the renovation was awarded to W. Müller Bedachungen GmbH from Oberlungwitz. The work is expected to begin in April 2026 and end in August 2026.

The decisions were made unanimously and followed a Europe-wide open procedure with price as the sole award criterion. The measures contribute to the implementation of the vision Pirna 2030, particularly to Guideline 5, which focuses on strengthening the social environment.

New Gymnasium Construction at Neundorf Primary School

Another project decided in February is the new construction of a gymnasium at the primary school in Neundorf. This project is part of the comprehensive renovation efforts at Pirna’s schools and has a total expenditure of 2.575 million euros.

  • The contract for the rough construction was awarded to Karl Köhler Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co. KG from Heidenau.
  • The construction work is to begin on February 24, 2026, and end on September 22, 2026.
  • The work includes site clearance, tree felling, rootstock removal, and the dismantling of play equipment.

Funding is provided through grant funds. The measure was already confirmed by the City Council in May 2025 and represents another step toward modernizing the school infrastructure in Pirna.

Construction Site Access at Schlosspark 14c – Planning and Communication

Another topic addressed by the committee concerned the construction site access to the object Schlosspark 14c. A residential building is currently under construction, with completion planned for the end of 2026. The administration was encouraged to inform residents in good time about construction-related restrictions.

  • Access is expected to be via plots 882/55 or 882/58/59.
  • Construction work at the Anstaltsscheune is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
  • Communication with residents is a central issue to minimize the burden caused by construction sites.

The discussion underlines the importance of transparent information policy in urban development—especially in urban areas with tight traffic connections.

Outlook on the Future of Urban Development in Pirna

The decisions made in February 2026 show that Pirna is actively working on the development of its infrastructure. The renovation of the Center for Education, Culture, and Social Affairs and the modernization of primary schools are investments in the city's future viability. At the same time, attention is also paid to communication and neighborhood relations, which is particularly important in a growing city.

In March 2026, the committee will continue to address topics such as the Anstaltskirche, the bus garage, and the use of historical buildings. These topics could shape urban development in the coming years and provide new impulses.
