Chemnitz April 2026: From the Senior Advisory Council to School Mergers – A Month in Focus

April 2026 brought numerous decisions in the areas of education, senior citizen work, local development, and administration in Chemnitz. Discover in our monthly review what was particularly important for Chemnitz citizens and how the city is continuing to develop.

A Month Marked by Education, Intergenerational Interaction, and Local Development

What Was Important This Month

  • School Merger in Chemnitz: The Vocational Schools for Business I and II will merge on August 1, 2026, to form the new Vocational School for Business and Administration in Chemnitz.
  • Intergenerational Project for the Elderly: The Senior Advisory Council is implementing the project "nebenan und mittendrin" (next door and right in the middle), focusing on low-threshold offers and stronger civic participation.
  • Funding for Local Associations: Several local councils distributed financial support to local associations, including for sports, culture, and fire protection.
  • New Developments on the Accommodation Tax: The City Council has decided to examine the possibility of converting the accommodation tax into a purpose-bound steering fee.
  • Digital ChemnitzPass: A digital version of the ChemnitzPass is in development – a concept is expected to be available by the end of August.

Education and School Structure: Merger Focuses on Future Readiness

The merger of the Vocational Schools for Business I and II into the new Vocational School for Business and Administration in Chemnitz is a milestone in the city's educational policy. The decision was made unanimously and is scheduled for August 1, 2026. This new educational center aims to strengthen structures for the future by aligning them with the requirements of the labor market and public administration.

The naming was determined based on the guidelines for naming schools and secured by the approval of the school conferences, the State Office for Schools and Education, and the Saxon Ministry of Culture and Education. The merger is part of a statewide trend to consolidate resources and adapt training programs to the future.

Intergenerational Interaction: Senior Advisory Council Strengthens Community

The Senior Advisory Council is setting impulses this month for stronger intergenerational interaction in Chemnitz. The project "nebenan und mittendrin: Shaping Participation in Old Age," led by Anja Schale in Department 5, builds on the experience of the previous project "Spaces of Generosity." The goal is to further develop meeting places, create low-threshold offers, and actively promote participation in old age.

In total, 475 participants took part in a survey accompanying the project. The results show that meeting places are perceived as close, everyday, and low-threshold – a solid basis for further measures. In addition to the Senior Advisory Council, associations, church communities, educational institutions, and shopping facilities are involved in the project.

Local Development and Association Support: Local Initiatives Benefit

In several local councils, financial support was distributed to locally based associations. For example, associations in Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain, Wittgensdorf, Röhrsdorf, and Grüna received subsidies from the Product Account 1111100.43182210 – an instrument that strengthens local culture, sports, and fire protection activities.

A highlight in Wittgensdorf was the funding of 1,500 euros for the Rainbow Bus e.V. to organize an open day for children and youth. In Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain, seven associations benefited with a total of 1,218 euros, including the Volunteer Fire Department.

The distribution of funds is an important instrument for participation and local community work. It shows how the city is growing together with its districts and supporting local initiatives.

Administration and Politics: New Approaches in Tax Policy and Digitization

The City Council made several landmark decisions this month that shape administrative policy in Chemnitz. This includes the review of whether the accommodation tax could be converted into a purpose-bound steering fee – a topic initiated by the AfD city council faction.

Another focus was on digitization: The City Council asked the administration to present a concept for the introduction of a digital ChemnitzPass by August 31, 2026. This project aims to make citizen-oriented services more efficient and accessible.

In addition, it was decided to transfer toll revenues from 2025 into a product account for road maintenance. The funds will be used exclusively for motor vehicle lanes, strengthening the transportation infrastructure.

Overview: Strengthening Local Identity

April 2026 in Chemnitz shows a city that is focusing on education, intergenerational interaction, local identity, and administrative perspectives. By merging schools, the future of education is secured. Through projects like "nebenan und mittendrin," the city promotes togetherness. And through funding for local associations, community work is strengthened.

At the same time, a change is visible in administrative policy: From the review of the accommodation tax to the digitization of the ChemnitzPass – the city is moving towards a future-ready, citizen-oriented administration.

Conclusion and Outlook

April 2026 was marked by strategic decisions, local participation, and future-oriented projects. The school merger, the support for associations, and the strengthening of intergenerational interaction show how Chemnitz is responding to future challenges.

In May 2026, further important decisions are expected, particularly the decision on the school merger in the City Council on May 27, 2026. In addition, the digital ChemnitzPass will be further advanced in planning. The city is moving along a path that connects education, community, and innovation.
