Kita Buratino in Dessau-Roßlau: Renovation in Focus for February 2026
In February 2026, the renovation work at the inclusive early childhood facility “Buratino” in Dessau-Roßlau was in the spotlight. The measure, necessitated by fire safety deficiencies and hazardous materials, brought about significant cost increases and organizational challenges.
Renovation of Kita Buratino: Between Fire Safety, Health Protection, and Cost Pressures
The renovation of the inclusive early childhood facility “Buratino” in Meinsdorf is one of the central topics in Dessau-Roßlau for February 2026. The measures, which had already begun in September 2025, became necessary due to fire safety deficiencies and the presence of hazardous materials. Asbestos-containing interior linings, contaminated insulation, and improvised structural connections required a comprehensive exposure and renovation – only after the Kita had vacated the premises could these deficiencies be fully identified.
Causes and Progress of the Renovation
The renovation work at Kita Buratino initially began while the facility was still in operation. However, due to the hazardous substances and fire safety issues, a complete evacuation became necessary. Only after the Kita had been vacated could the structural deficiencies be fully revealed and appropriate renovation measures planned. The city identified an alternative location to ensure the care of children during the construction works.
The renovation now includes not only fire safety and structural improvements, but also the renewal of interior linings, sanitary facilities, and electrical installations. Costs increased due to the expanded measures and planning developments – from an initial 4,906,000 euros to the current 5,727,800 euros. Market-driven construction price increases and additional planning efforts also contributed to the cost development.
Long-Term Benefits Despite Rising Costs
Despite the cost increase, the renovation brings long-term benefits. The switch to LED lighting and the installation of a bivalent heating system will reduce operating costs and increase energy efficiency. In addition, the facility will offer modern, safe, and health-friendly childcare conditions. The renovation is therefore not only a fire safety and health protection project, but also an investment step in the future viability of the Kita.
Further Developments in the Area of Early Childhood Facilities
Alongside the renovation of Kita Buratino, there were other relevant developments in the area of early childhood facilities in Dessau-Roßlau in February 2026. The municipal subsidiary Dessau-Roßlauer Kindertagesstätten (DeKiTa) implemented the 2026 business plan and prepared for the commissioning of a new after-school facility at the “Pestalozzischule.” In addition, a new educational concept was introduced at Kita “Kinderland,” focusing on inquiry-based and project-based learning.
The city also addressed the acceptance of donations and grants received by the subsidiary DeKiTa in November and December 2025. These contributions support the financial stability of the early childhood facility operations, especially in times of rising costs and limited funding opportunities.
Outlook and Challenges
The renovation of Kita Buratino is an example of how complex decision-making processes take place in municipal childcare. The experiences from this project show that comprehensive renovations should not be carried out while the facility is still in operation to ensure complete investigations and planning certainty. In addition, the project highlights how sensitive the funding of municipal early childhood facilities is – especially in times of rising construction costs and limited funding.
In the further course of 2026, Dessau-Roßlau will continue to advance investments in the area of early childhood facilities, including the new construction of Kita “Mildensee & Kleutsch” and the renovation of the former children’s day care center “Bussi-Bär.” These projects underscore the city's approach to creating reliable and modern childcare options for children in the long term.
