Saarlouis in Focus: Sports Policy in March 2026

In March 2026, Saarlouis will set new impulses in local sports policy with investments in sports facilities, preparations for the Special Olympics, and planning for the State Gymnastics Festival 2028.

Investments in Sports Facilities: Progress and Challenges

In March 2026, Saarlouis highlighted significant progress in the renovation and modernization of municipal sports facilities. The conversion of the natural grass pitch in Roden to an artificial turf pitch was completed on December 4, 2025, and has since been used by SC Roden. However, due to wet weather conditions, the installation of cork infill had to be postponed until early 2026. The club has already expressed its approval of the new pitch, and its contribution has been transferred to the city's account.

Ongoing work is also taking place on the renovation of the running track at the Großer Sand Stadium. The work began in November 2025 but was repeatedly interrupted. Only in March 2026 could the work resume, with a completion planned for the end of May 2026.

Another project is the planned construction of a barrier-free multifunctional building for school and club sports at the Fraulautern Sports Center. The project sketch has been submitted, and with a total cost of 1.5 million euros and a subsidy of 675,000 euros, the city is hoping for state support. However, the funding program "Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities" is oversubscribed, with over 3,600 project sketches and a total funding request of 7.5 billion euros. The final selection by the budget committee of the German Bundestag is expected in April 2026.

Special Olympics National Games 2026: Major Event in the Region

Saarlouis will host the Special Olympics National Games in 2026, taking place from June 15 to 20, 2026. The handball competitions will be held at the Stadtgarten Hall and the Sports Hall in Fliesen, with the torch relay running through the city center on June 11, 2026. The Grubenlamp will be transported from Kleiner Markt to the Ravelin V, where the closing ceremony will take place.

The event is organized by Special Olympics Deutschland Live gGmbH (SODL) in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Sports (MIBS), the State Sports Association for Saarland (LSVS), and Special Olympics in Saarland e.V. (SOSL).

Preparations are in full swing. Several preparatory meetings and workshops were already held in 2025 to plan the infrastructure and program. The city of Saarlouis has taken an active role to ensure the event runs smoothly and meets high standards.

State Gymnastics Festival 2028: Preparations Begin

In addition to the Special Olympics 2026, Saarlouis is also responsible for the State Gymnastics Festival 2028, which will take place from June 15 to 18, 2028. The organizer is the Saarland Gymnastics Association e.V. (STB), which held initial talks with the city in 2025. A preparatory meeting with clubs, the STB, and the city took place in September 2025, followed by a program workshop in October 2025. In February 2026, a visit to the city's sports and event venues was conducted to assess the infrastructure for the gymnastics festival.

The city of Saarlouis sees these major events as an opportunity to strengthen its sporting identity and simultaneously benefit economically and in terms of tourism. Therefore, preparations have started very early to tackle all organizational challenges.

Outlook: Sports as a Central Element of Municipal Identity

With investments in sports facilities, preparations for the Special Olympics 2026, and planning for the State Gymnastics Festival 2028, Saarlouis is demonstrating that sports play a central role in municipal policy. The city is not only investing in infrastructure but also in the future of its clubs, schools, and citizens.

Challenges such as the lengthy funding application process or weather conditions affecting construction projects show that large-scale projects in the municipality are often complex. Nevertheless, Saarlouis is sending a strong signal for the future viability and sporting orientation of the city with these initiatives.
